Exploiting the advantages of sustainable agricultural development

After more than 4 years of implementing Resolution No. 07-NQ/HU dated March 4, 2021 of the Thuan Chau District Party Committee on developing organic agriculture and applying high technology, the district's agricultural sector has had many positive changes. Linking chains from production to processing and consumption have gradually been formed, contributing to meeting domestic market demand and aiming for export.

Towards sustainable agricultural production

Thuan Chau has 28 communes and towns; people's income mainly depends on agricultural production. Aiming at sustainable agricultural production, the District Party Executive Committee issued Resolution No. 07-NQ/HU with 7 main targets and 17 component targets, striving by 2025: The whole district will have 1,500 hectares of tea, over 5,220 hectares of coffee trees, 4,600 hectares of fruit trees; 3,000 hectares apply scientific and technical advances, apply high technology, and produce in an organic direction.

Maintain 1,000 fish cages, with an output of over 1,500 tons; develop 500 hectares of medicinal plants; form and develop 15 concentrated agricultural, forestry and fishery raw material areas; maintain and develop agricultural products with protected trademarks; effectively implement the OCOP program; expand the market for agricultural products...

To implement the set targets, the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee has established a Steering Committee and a Project Team; directed agencies and units to thoroughly disseminate and deploy the resolutions and projects to all civil servants, public employees, party members, businesses, organizations, individuals and people in the area.

Comrade Thao A Sua, Standing Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, said: The Standing Committee of the District Party Committee has clearly assigned tasks, linked with the responsibilities of the collective and the leader for effective implementation. Incorporate the contents of the resolution into planning, land use plans, development plans of sectors and fields, and annual socio -economic development plans. Integrate capital sources from national target programs to implement projects to support trees and seedlings for the people.

Based on the orientation, up to now, the district has planned 3 economic zones, including: Economic zone along National Highway 6, mainly focusing on cultivating tea, coffee, taro and fruit trees; highland and remote communes develop agriculture and forestry; areas along the Da River develop coffee, rubber, afforestation, exploit the water surface of aquaculture ponds. To increase the value of products, the district integrates programs and projects to support plant and animal varieties; training to improve knowledge for farmers; developing rural and intra-field transportation; providing market information to farmers...

Building specialized commodity cultivation areas

With advantages in land and labor resources, the district has directed units, departments, professionals and communes to mobilize farmers to actively apply new science and technology to production; encourage the implementation of research topics, applications, and promising pilot production projects to apply to production.

Mr. Ha Trung Thang, Vice Chairman of Thuan Chau District People's Committee, said: Implementing agricultural restructuring associated with new rural construction, the district encourages and attracts investment enterprises; strengthens the linkage between farmers and enterprises through building production chains associated with product consumption. Directs each commune to prioritize the development of a number of key agricultural products and groups of agricultural products in which the locality has advantages to create concentrated agricultural areas with large-scale commodities.

To increase the value of products, the district has directed specialized agencies to propagate and mobilize people to join together to establish cooperatives, especially cooperatives operating in the agricultural sector. Up to now, the whole district has 60 cooperatives, with 1,087 members. The cooperatives have closely linked together in the production and consumption of agricultural products, creating jobs and income for workers. The average revenue reaches more than 1 billion VND/cooperative/year; the average income of cooperative members is 45 million VND/year.

In 2020, Thu Dan Oolong tea products of Thu Dan Tea Company Limited, Kien Xuong village, Phong Lai commune, were recognized as 4-star OCOP products. On average, each year, the Company exports 250 tons of Oolong tea to domestic and foreign markets; creating stable jobs for 55 workers, with an income of 9 million VND/person/month.

Mr. Pham Van Doanh, Director of Thu Dan Tea Company Limited, shared: Currently, the company has 20 hectares of tea, mainly Kim Tuyen tea variety, with dry green tea products and tea bags. At the end of 2024, the company's Oolong tea products will be re-evaluated to meet 4-star OCOP standards. This is the key for the product to continue to affirm its brand, contributing to expanding the consumption market, especially large domestic supermarkets and exporting abroad.

In 2021, from the black chicken farming model supported by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, 17 households in Cha May village, Long He commune, joined together to establish Cha May agricultural cooperative. In order for the cooperative to operate effectively, the cooperative's Board of Directors developed a production plan; members actively participated in science and technology transfer classes.

Mr. Lau A Lau, Director of Cha May Agricultural Cooperative, Long He Commune, informed: The district supported the completion of documents and procedures to request VietGAP certification. Currently, the Cooperative is raising nearly 1,000 black chickens. The two products of black chicken floss and vacuum-packed whole black chicken of the Cooperative are certified as 3-star OCOP products. Building OCOP products will create unique local products, contributing to increasing income for members.

To date, the district has 3,911 hectares of fruit trees, 1,377 hectares of tea trees, 6,658 hectares of coffee trees; maintains over 56,000 buffaloes and cows, 761,000 poultry. At the same time, 11 production chains have been formed according to the value chain associated with processing and consumption of products, including mangoes, oranges, avocados, red-fleshed dragon fruit, coffee, and off-season vegetables and fruits.

There are 25 cultivation facilities granted VietGAP certificates, with over 400 hectares; 10 fruit growing area codes, of which 2 mango growing area codes, with 17 hectares meeting export quality standards to the US, EU, Australia, Japan markets... In the period of 2021-2024, the whole district exported more than 200 tons of mangoes and 405 tons of bananas to the Chinese market, 71 tons of red-fleshed dragon fruit to the Russian market and other demanding markets.

In addition, the district maintains 11 OCOP products with 3 stars or more, many products are welcomed by consumers in and outside the province and participate in export, initially affirming the brand, such as: Thu Dan Oolong Tea, Pha Din Top tourist destination, Chieng La smoked fish, Da River tilapia, Trong Nguyen tea...

Through review and evaluation, Thuan Chau has completed 4/7 main targets and 12/17 component targets according to Resolution No. 07. Comrade Thao A Sua, Standing Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, added: After completing the targets, the district continues to integrate capital sources from the program, especially the national target programs, to focus on intensive cultivation, care and expansion of fruit tree areas, ensuring compliance with the set plan. Promote linkages in product consumption according to the value chain, build brands for typical agricultural products. Strengthen quality management of plant and animal varieties; focus on building concentrated agricultural production areas in sync with the planning of the province's processing plant network.

With synchronous and practical solutions in implementing Resolution No. 07, Thuan Chau agriculture is gradually transforming strongly. This will be a solid foundation for the district to make a breakthrough, increase income for people; at the same time, create an important driving force in the journey of building a sustainable new countryside.
