Advanced archaeological exploration and analysis techniques have shown that they belonged to a Sambaquian people who lived mainly on marine resources. Photo: @Buket Çağlayan. The skeletons are quite short, the tallest being only 1.6 meters long. Photo: @Buket Çağlayan.
Most of the skeletons belonged to adult males, along with the remains of two children. Photo: @Buket Çağlayan. Preliminary analysis suggests that these were individuals who engaged in vigorous physical activity, as evidenced by bone marks that indicated they were subjected to heavy loads and moved a lot. All told, they were coastal hunter-gatherers who had formerly inhabited the area. The reasons behind the mysterious disappearance of this coastal civilization remain unclear. Photo: @Buket Çağlayan.
