Urgently overcome traffic damage after rain and flood

Heavy rains lasting from July 21 to August 1, 2025, rising water levels in rivers and streams caused flooding, traffic jams, landslides and damage to many structures. Provincial authorities, sectors and localities are urgently repairing essential traffic routes, ensuring the transportation of relief goods and people's travel.

According to statistics, heavy rain caused landslides and road surface silting on national highways with an estimated volume of nearly 260,000 m3 /1,949 locations; landslides of 364 m of negative slope, erosion of roadside at 29 locations; damage to 550 m2 of road surface, 1,522 m of ditches, 16 culverts, 2 steel cage embankments; flooding and traffic jams at 99 locations.

Many landslides due to floods on Highway 4G.

For the provincial road system, heavy rain caused landslides of positive slopes and road surface sedimentation with a volume of over 177,000 m3 /2,699 locations; landslides of negative slopes 517 m/29 locations; damaged road surface 2,872 m2 /150 locations; subsidence and broken roadbed and surface 1,138 m2 /5 locations... The total estimated value of traffic damage is over 263.4 billion VND.

In particular, the historic flood on the Ma River on August 1,   causing great damage to traffic infrastructure in communes along the river, including: Chieng So, Huoi Mot, Muong Lam, Song Ma, Chieng Khoong... Floods rose high, causing blockages at 62 locations on National Highway 4G from Km 95, Huoi Mot commune to Km 113, Sop Cop commune; washing away 2 bridges in Chieng So and Muong Lam communes; the Huoi Mot - Nam Man inter-commune road (21 km long) collapsed, broke and could not be used; the concrete bridge across Nam Cong stream from National Highway 4G - Nam Cong 3A Hydropower Plant was washed away...

Flood water rose and eroded houses in Huoi Mot commune.

After the landslides and sedimentation caused traffic jams, the Provincial People's Committee directed the Department of Construction to be on duty 24/7 to grasp and monitor the developments of floods and rains, and have timely response solutions; directed the contractor to send people on duty, identify vulnerable locations, arrange materials, machinery, and workers to immediately fix landslides on the positive slopes that caused traffic jams on national highways and provincial roads, and handle some dangerous landslides on the negative slopes, ensuring smooth traffic, not allowing prolonged congestion.

Nam Cong Hydropower Plant is at high risk of landslides.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, said: The Department has directed the Road Maintenance Management Board to inspect the scene, verify the damage, and urge contractors to implement plans to ensure safe and smooth traffic. To date, 136 traffic jams on national and provincial highways have been resolved. Units continue to mobilize machinery and human resources to handle landslides, sedimentation, dredge sewers, restore roadbeds and surfaces; install warning signs and barriers at landslide and damaged points; and add markers in flooded areas. At the same time, survey and propose solutions according to regulations. For rural roads, the People's Committees of communes and related units focus on overcoming and ensuring smooth routes to commune centers and villages.

An Loc Company Limited, Song Ma Commune, is assigned to carry out road maintenance management and ensure traffic safety on National Highway 4G from Km90 to Km120. During the recent flood, the road managed by the unit had many landslides with an estimated volume of over 100,000 m3 , including 14 negative slope landslides with a total length of 300 m, most concentrated from Km95 to Km113 in Huoi Mot Commune.

Mr. Doan Van Nghia, Director of An Loc Company Limited, shared: The unit mobilized 100% of its human resources, was on duty 24/7, actively patrolled the roads, and promptly reported the situation to the Regional Defense Command according to regulations. After the landslide occurred, the unit brought machinery and human resources to the scene, worked overtime through the night to urgently fix the problem, ensuring the earliest road opening time.

Construction units mobilized maximum means to overcome landslides.

After the floods from July 26 to August 1, in recent days, the communes along the Ma River have continued to experience heavy rain, posing a potential risk of landslides and rockfalls. Currently, construction units are increasing their readiness to deal with any possible situations.

Mr. Phan Van Tuan, Deputy Director of Huu Hao Tay Bac Company Limited, said: The unit is implementing the project to upgrade the 4G national highway from Km106 to Km109 (Huoi Mot - Sop Cop). In adverse weather conditions and forecasts that landslides may continue to occur on the route, the unit temporarily stops construction, focuses on available human resources and means, coordinates with the road maintenance management unit to warn when there is danger, diverts traffic, thoroughly handles landslides, clears obstacles on the route, and ensures safety for people traveling.

After the great damage to traffic infrastructure, the Department of Construction is currently proposing to the Provincial People's Committee to recommend ministries and branches to allocate funding to overcome the consequences of natural disasters caused by floods on the province's national highways with a budget of about 45.3 billion VND; pay attention to supporting investment in 2 reinforced concrete bridges across the Ma River in Chieng So and Muong Lam communes with an estimated budget of about 50 billion VND and implementing the Emergency Project to overcome the consequences of natural disasters on the Huoi Mot - Nam Man route connecting to 8 villages in the old Nam Man commune, with a total estimated budget of 157.5 billion VND; ensuring traffic infrastructure in the province, people can rest assured to stabilize their lives.

With the efforts of agencies, units and localities, the traffic system in the affected areas has been basically restored, ensuring rescue services and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters. However, due to the complicated developments of rain and floods, the risk of flash floods and landslides is very high. In addition to the proactiveness of agencies and local authorities, people need to be vigilant when participating in traffic to avoid unfortunate losses.
