Khanh Son: Durian fruit falls off due to weather shock

Báo Khánh HòaBáo Khánh Hòa18/05/2023

Due to the prolonged heat, in early May, heavy rains in Khanh Son district caused many durian areas in the district to lose young fruit. Farmers in the communes are focusing on care to ensure the yield and quality of this year's durian crop.

In recent days, many durian growers in Hap Thinh residential group (To Hap town) have been busy taking care of durian to limit the situation of young fruit falling due to weather changes. Mr. Tran Dung - a durian garden owner in the area said: "The hot weather lasted from after Tet, until early May this year, the first heavy rain of the season has caused the durian trees to be shocked by the weather, causing the trees to lose a lot of young fruit. For example, my family has 2.2 hectares of durian, of which 1 hectare is young durian (5 years old), the rate of young durian fruit falling is up to more than 50%, old durian fruit falls less, about 25% of the fruit on the branches. I am worried that in this hot and rainy weather, the durian will continue to lose fruit".

Similarly, many durian gardeners in the communes of Thanh Son, Son Lam, Son Binh, Son Hiep, To Hap town... are busy taking care of their family's durian gardens after young fruits fall a lot due to the impact of the weather; the rate of durian falling is up to about 30% of the fruits on the branches, and the rate of falling is even higher in young durian gardens (4-5 years old). For example, in Son Binh commune, there are 430 hectares of durian, of which 380 hectares are for harvest. Due to the impact of the weather, more than 20 hectares of young durian of the gardeners in the area have a rate of dropping more than 30% of the fruits. In Son Lam commune, out of 650 hectares of durian in the whole commune, 370 hectares are in the period of budding and setting fruit; due to weather shock and heavy rain in early May, the whole commune has 80 hectares of durian with fruit falling, the rate of dropping more than 80% of the fruits on the branches.

Currently, Khanh Son district has about 2,500 hectares of durian, of which more than 1,500 hectares are in the commercial period. Recently, due to the impact of moderate to heavy rain during the flowering and fruiting stages, the growth and development of durian trees has been affected; it is estimated that the rate of young durian fruit falling in gardens with fruit trees is about 30-35%, some gardens have a lot of fruit falling, the rate of falling is up to 70-80% of the fruit on the branches. In addition, erratic weather also creates conditions for many types of pests to appear on durian trees.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nhuan - Chairman of Khanh Son District People's Committee said: In the face of prolonged hot weather and early season rains, causing durian to drop young fruit, the District People's Committee has directed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to preside over and coordinate with the Agricultural Extension Station, the Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection Station, and the People's Committees of communes and towns in the area to propagate and guide people to care for and prevent pests and diseases for crops, especially durian trees in the fruit-bearing period to ensure productivity and quality. In particular, gardeners need to note that for durian gardens that are slightly affected, with a large number of fruits still on the branches, they should continue to care for and supplement nutrients for the trees so that the durian does not continue to drop young fruit. For gardens with a high rate of flower and fruit drop, people should treat them to stimulate the trees to flower again.

According to the recommendations of the professional agencies of Khanh Son district, during the period when durian flowers bloom and set fruit, if it rains, the tree is very likely to drop fruit and produce new shoots. Therefore, people should take care of and spray pesticides according to the instructions they have been trained to control and reduce fruit drop, prevent the tree from producing new shoots, helping the pollination and fruit setting process to be better. During the period when flowers bloom and set fruit from 15-20 days, it is necessary to spray foliar fertilizers according to the recommendations to increase the fruit set rate and limit the phenomenon of burnt segments. In addition, farmers also need to regularly visit the garden to check and grasp the developments of pests and diseases, apply the solutions that have been instructed to prevent mealybugs, green leafhoppers, leafhoppers, fruit borers, etc.
