The search was suspended at around 5 p.m. on May 30 because of darkness and fears of further landslides, said Mukhammad Yusron, the district commander. The search will resume on May 31.

According to Mr. Bambang Tirto Mulyono, head of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources of West Java, inappropriate mining methods were the cause of this disaster. Photo: Xinhua.

"The workers were mining from the bottom of the mountain up, instead of from the top down," Mulyono told Detik Jabar, a local news site. Photo: Xinhua.

He asked the Governor of West Java to temporarily close the area so that inspections and assessments can be carried out to determine whether the mine is operating legally. If it is not legal, the mine could be closed permanently. Photo: Xinhua.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has scheduled a visit to the site of the landslide and to assess the safety of the quarry. Photo: Xinhua.
