In the trend of strong AI development on smartphones, not only flagships but also mid-range phones need to be equipped with a processor powerful enough to handle tasks such as image and video processing, virtual assistants, or running large language models (LLM).
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is a comprehensive upgrade over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 launched in 2023, with AI performance improved by up to 65%, according to Qualcomm. This is a big step forward for mid-range smartphones to perform AI features right on the device, limiting data sending to the cloud, thereby better protecting user privacy.
Not only AI, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 also increases overall performance by 27% and graphics processing by 30% compared to the previous generation. The camera also benefits from AI, as the chip supports automatic exposure adjustment, fast focus and smarter image processing.
According to Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile products at Qualcomm Technologies, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 unlocks new capabilities never before seen in the 7-series by integrating AI experiences directly into the hardware, making it easier than ever for users to capture, create and share content.
"The platform is also powered by Snapdragon Sound technology that integrates advanced audio enhancements, including the first time Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology is supported outside the 8-series, bringing advanced multimedia experiences to more users than ever before," added Mr. Chris Patrick.
As planned, the first mid-range phones equipped with Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 will be launched in May 2025. This promises to bring a smarter, faster experience to users without having to spend too much money on high-end phones.
