"Students' right to take the 10th grade entrance exam must not be hindered."

(PLVN) - This is the affirmation of the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training (GD&DT) in response to the reflection that some schools in Hanoi have encouraged 9th grade students not to participate in the entrance exam to public 10th grade schools.

In recent days, many parents have reported that some teachers and schools have advised students "not to take the entrance exam to public grade 10", or suggested that they register for admission to vocationaleducation centers, continuing education centers, or vocational schools.

Regarding this issue, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training - Tran The Cuong said that from the beginning of the school year, the Department has had specific instructions on the orientation of students after graduating from secondary school, which must be based on the students' personal abilities, legitimate aspirations and appropriate career orientation. Schools can advise and provide diverse information, but absolutely must not cause confusion or hinder students' right to take the 10th grade entrance exam.

"The pressure to enter public schools in Hanoi is huge. Therefore, the education sector and schools create conditions and support students to study with confidence and confidently participate in the exam. Encouraging students not to take the exam is against educational ethics and affects their right to study, so it is unacceptable," said Mr. Tran The Cuong.

Currently, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has received feedback from parents that some teachers or schools, for various reasons, have advised students "not to take the entrance exam to public grade 10", or suggested that they register for admission to vocational education centers - continuing education or vocational schools. The Department has directed the education and training departments to review and report specifically.

"Any coercive or misdirected behavior towards students will be severely punished," the head of Hanoi's education sector affirmed.

According to Mr. Cuong, there are many types of schools in the city, ensuring that they meet the learning needs of students after graduating from junior high school. These are private schools, vocational education centers - continuing education centers, vocational schools... Choosing which learning model is the wish and right of the students, as well as their families.

"We also want to send a message to parents and students: The public high school entrance exam is an important milestone, but it is not the only way to study. Parents need to create a comfortable atmosphere, not putting pressure on their children. The Department is committed to accompanying and supporting all students who wish to take the exam, creating learning conditions for them in many suitable forms, absolutely not leaving anyone behind," he added.

The test does not trick candidates.

Regarding the exam questions for the 10th grade entrance exam, the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the official exam questions will follow the same structure and format as the sample questions that the Department announced at the beginning of the school year. The exam content will mainly be based on the 9th grade program, ensuring that it is not "puzzling" and does not fall outside the program that students have learned in middle school.

Before the exam, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requested schools to organize for students to study the regulations. Students need to understand the regulations to avoid violating the rules. In particular, they need to arrive at the exam location on time, not bring phones, technological devices as well as prohibited items into the exam room.

The Department of Education and Training has requested that officials and teachers take the exam seriously but still have a gentle and friendly attitude, creating a comfortable atmosphere for candidates to do the test with the best results.

In the 2025-2026 school year, Hanoi has implemented many innovations in 10th grade admissions to reduce pressure on students while ensuring fairness and transparency.

One of the notable new points is the adjustment of the way to calculate the admission score for grade 10. If previously, the scores of Math and Literature were multiplied by a factor of 2, this year this calculation method has been removed, and instead the scores of the 3 subjects are added together. The maximum total admission score is 30 points. This calculation method aims to ensure fairness between subjects and encourage students to study all subjects equally.

In addition, to reduce pressure on students, the City has built new and repaired more schools, increasing the enrollment rate in public schools to more than 64%, equivalent to recruiting about 80,000 students.

Immediately after the exam ends, the examination board will immediately get to work to ensure the announcement of exam results and benchmark scores within the expected time...
