Man City invested heavily from the beginning of the 2025 summer transfer window when bringing in 4 new players, including 2 midfielders Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. The surplus of personnel in the midfield forced coach Pep Guardiola and sporting director Hugo Viana to streamline the squad.
According to MEN , five midfielders could leave Man City this summer including Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish, James McAtee, Nico Gonzalez and Ilkay Gundogan.
Kalvin Phillips is the most obvious case, as he is not part of Pep Guardiola's plans for the 2025/26 season, with the former England international likely to return to Elland Road following Leeds United's promotion.
Meanwhile, Grealish has attracted attention from both the Premier League and Serie A. Tottenham and Everton have expressed interest in Grealish. In Serie A, Napoli are also considering recruiting the English midfielder. However, Grealish's salary of up to £300,000 a week is a big barrier for any club.
Nico Gonzalez and Gundogan are two special cases. Man City have no intention of selling this duo but are ready to listen to any offers. The return of Rodri means that Nico and Gundogan's chances of starting are gradually decreasing.
Finally, there is James McAtee, who is being sold by Man City for £20-25m. After leading England U21s to Euro U21 glory this summer, McAtee is desperate for more first-team football, but Pep can’t guarantee it.
