Encourage young people to have children early and stabilize their lives.

On November 13, the Department of Population (Department of Health) coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union to organize the Forum "Listening to young people talk about the issue of low birth rate" in 2025.

Doctors and experts gave their opinions at the Forum.

Speaking at the Forum, Master Nguyen Hong An, lecturer of Psychology at Hoa Sen University, said that most Vietnamese people want to have two children, but many young families are worried that they do not have enough financial resources to raise their children as expected. Although the State has policies on social insurance, health care and childcare subsidies, the gap between actual ability and the desire to "raise children properly" makes having children a challenge.

Master Nguyen Hong An also analyzed that many young people consider between having children and personal development, with income only "enough to live for themselves". The trend of nuclear families replacing multi-generational families also increases the pressure on young couples. When parents feel secure financially, mentally and share responsibilities in the family, they will be more ready to have children. Another challenge is the gender role in the modern family, when women both take on social work and family responsibilities. This situation leads to the need for a policy system and support network to help both husband and wife share childcare, housework and spiritual support for each other.

According to Master Nguyen Hong An, past family experiences influence the decision to get married and have children. Those who have witnessed divorce and violence are often more cautious when starting a family. The state of “parental burnout” is likely to appear when the material and emotional responsibilities are too much and there is a lack of medical, psychological and educational support. Young people need to be aware of their own abilities, choose the right time and method and receive support from family, community and social policies to overcome psychological pressure.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Ho Manh Tuong, Professional Advisor of the Intrauterine Reproductive Support Unit System (IVFMD), My Duc Hospital, said that modern lifestyle, late marriage, work pressure, stress and environmental pollution reduce the ability to reproduce naturally. Mr. Ho Mang Tuong said that pregnant women and children, with the number of eggs formed in the womb and gradually decreasing over time, should give birth before the age of 35 to limit health risks.

From a professional perspective, according to Dr. Ho Manh Tuong, declining egg quality makes it difficult to conceive, increases the risk of miscarriage and congenital abnormalities. Female fertility usually ends around 45 years old, although menopause occurs at 49 - 50 years old. Many people mistakenly think that they can delay having children thanks to artificial insemination, but egg quality still determines the result. Being overweight, hormonal disorders, stress, pollution, unwanted abortions or gynecological diseases also increase the rate of infertility, not to mention the influence of genetic factors. For men, fertility is simpler but also declines after the age of 40, affected by pollution, poor nutrition and stress. Therefore, having children early is not only a population recommendation but also related to health and family happiness, helping young people plan a scientific and sustainable life.

Young people share their opinions at the Forum.

At the Forum, young people and students also gave many opinions on family planning, balancing career development, financial stability and childcare responsibilities.

Ngo Thai Bao, a fourth-year student at Van Hien University, said he chose to get married after the age of 30 to have time to stabilize his career and experience personal life. Thai Bao said that he wanted to focus on developing himself and accumulating experience so that he could better prepare for his family's future.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Phuong Thao, a second-year student at the same school, plans to have two children when she gets married so that she can take good care of them and share the responsibility of taking care of them when they get old. Thao believes that having two children is enough to provide complete care and at the same time reduce the pressure on each child in the future.

These two views reflect young people's trade-offs between personal development, career stability and family responsibilities in the context of today's low fertility rate.
