Greenhouse gas emissions inventory to green agriculture

From the development of a green and sustainable agricultural economy, greenhouse gas emissions inventory is not only a technical requirement but also a management tool that contributes to promoting farming models into a green orbit.

According to Ms. Cao Thi Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Lam Dong province, in the context of increasingly complex climate change, the work of inventorying greenhouse gas emissions plays a particularly important role. It is the basis for assessing and developing emission reduction policies, and at the same time the foundation for implementing national commitments on the target of net zero emissions that Vietnam committed to at the COP26 Conference.

Many experts believe that implementing greenhouse gas emission reduction farming models is the "key" to helping Vietnamese agricultural products achieve the "dual" growth target: improving quality, meeting export market standards, increasing competitiveness, saving resources, reducing emissions, and adapting to climate change.

In fact, many farming models in Lam Dong have also proven economic efficiency when applying smart farming measures: drip irrigation and fertilization through automatic stripping systems, integrated pest management, smart care... All farming processes are measured, counted, and monitored by technological equipment, including greenhouse gas control. However, the Department of Industry and Trade said that Lam Dong province still has a number of facilities on the list of greenhouse gas inventories, in addition to a number of facilities that also have significant emissions. In particular, a number of thermal power plants in Vinh Tan and Phu Quy have very high greenhouse gas emissions.

To reduce emissions in agricultural production, equip farmers and businesses with in-depth knowledge and skills on greenhouse gas inventory, Lam Dong Department of Industry and Trade and the Institute for Technology Application Research organized training on knowledge, methods of collecting and processing emission data for trainees who are officers in charge of the emission sector, farmers - direct producers and agricultural enterprises. Dr. Le Hai Hung - Director of the Institute for Technology Application Research said that understanding the regulations on greenhouse gas inventory, as well as mastering the techniques, calculation methods, and preparing inventory reports according to national and international regulations is very necessary. Opening a training course on greenhouse gas inventory techniques and methods shows Lam Dong's proactiveness in implementing its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards sustainable agriculture.

Dr. Le Hai Hung imparted general knowledge about greenhouse gases, greenhouse effect, carbon market; greenhouse gas inventory method according to ISO 14064:2018, carbon footprint of products according to ISO 14067:2020. Dr. Le Hai Hung said that greenhouse gas inventory is not only a technical requirement, but also a management tool, contributing to promoting ecological, green and sustainable agriculture.

Discussing this issue, a production facility owner in Lam Dong said that, in the context of many countries in the world tightening “green” standards for agricultural products, implementing a model of cropping to reduce emissions is almost the only way. However, the biggest obstacle when applying a model of cropping to reduce emissions is the high initial investment capital. In addition, the technical infrastructure to support farmers at the grassroots level still has many limitations.

From this reality, the owner of an agricultural production facility in Lam Dong recommends that the State should have a policy to support green credit, encourage businesses to invest in green agriculture, and at the same time have a policy to provide technical support for farmers. A suitable policy will be the foundation for the agricultural economy to develop in a green and sustainable direction, meeting domestic and export standards.
