This good news is partly due to the urgent completion of highways, helping people travel more smoothly and safely.
Many places work through holidays because of the highway
Before the holiday, the Ministry of Construction inaugurated and opened 5 key transport projects with a total length of 278km to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day. Accordingly, there are 4 component projects of the North-South Expressway Project in the East (2021-2025 period) and 1 expressway project invested by the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC).

Thus, to date, 2,249km of expressways have been completed nationwide. It is expected that about 278km will be added to the road by September 30 this year, bringing the total to about 2,527km. According to Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh, if on schedule, the goal is that by the end of 2025, the whole country will have more than 3,000km of existing expressways within reach.
With an urgent spirit, racing against time to bring the project to the finish line, during the recent holiday, on many key traffic projects, officers, engineers and workers worked through the holidays. Mr. Tran Van Chuan, Deputy Director of the Huu Nghi-Chi Lang Expressway Project Management Board, said that taking advantage of the sunny weather, the construction unit organized 182 construction teams, mobilizing 2,000 engineers, workers and more than 1,000 pieces of equipment. With great determination, contractors are accelerating towards the goal of completing the asphalt concrete layer by the end of 2025. There is still a lot of work, so officers and workers are determined to stay at the construction site, work through the holidays, and focus maximum resources on construction to meet the project's completion schedule by the end of this year.
Similarly, Mr. Le Thanh Hai, General Director of the Central Construction Group, said that the unit has maintained at all construction sites nearly 500 engineers, technicians, operators and workers along with 300 locomotives and equipment at the Chi Thanh-Van Phong Expressway Project, Package 9-XL, Component Project 2 of the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway to carry out construction throughout the holidays with the highest determination to complete the project on schedule, ensuring aesthetics, techniques, and quality, bringing the project to the finish line on time.
Mr. Hai added: “The construction items during the April 30-May 1 holiday include accelerating the construction of the roadbed, filling the area with soil to treat weak soil; bridge decks, underpasses, casting of median structures... The estimated value of the projects completed during the holiday is about 30 billion VND,”. In addition, with 100% of the equipment and workers mobilized, meeting the project's construction progress requirements and taking full advantage of the weather conditions of this year's dry season, the leader of Cienco4 Group said that workers working during the holiday will receive a salary of 300% compared to the normal daily salary according to the current Labor Law.
Paving the way for local economic prosperity
Looking back over the past 4 years, many North-South expressways crossing rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, and wild lands have been inaugurated and put into operation, opening up new urban development spaces, changing many lands. According to a report by the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction), in the period 2001-2010, the whole country only put into operation 89km of expressways.
During the 2011-2020 period, the Resolution of the 11th Party Congress, concretized in Resolution 13-NQ/TW, identified that the infrastructure system in our country still has many limitations and weaknesses, which are bottlenecks in the development process; at the same time, investment in the expressway system is identified as an important driving force for national development. During this period, an additional 1,074km was put into operation, bringing the total length of our country's roads by the end of 2020 to 1,163km.
According to the Department of Construction Investment and Management (Ministry of Construction), it is expected that in 2025, about 1,188km of expressways including 28 projects/component projects will be completed, including 17 projects (total length of 889km) managed by the Ministry of Construction, 11 projects (299km) managed by localities. As for the North-South expressway in the East, according to the plan, the route has a total length of 2,055km (accounting for 22% of the total length of the expressway network). The starting point is at Huu Nghi border gate, Lang Son province. The end point is in Ca Mau city, with a scale of 6 to 12 lanes.
To date, the entire route has been put into operation for 1,206km, and 834km is under construction (to be completed in 2025, except for the Huu Nghi-Chi Lang border gate section, which is 43km long). Of which, the North-South Eastern Expressway investment project in the 2017-2020 period includes 11 component projects with a length of 654km, with a scale of 2-6 lanes, and has been fully completed and put into operation. The Cao Bo-Mai Son section is being expanded from 4 to 6 lanes (to be completed in 2026), and the Cam Lo-La Son section is being expanded from 2 to 4 complete lanes (to be completed in 2026). The North-South Eastern Expressway investment project in the 2021-2025 period includes 12 component projects, 721km long, with a scale of 4 limited lanes, under construction, to be completed in 2025.
The year 2025 promises to mark an important milestone for the transport sector with the goal of completing 3,000 km of highways. Highways through mountains, forests, along the coast or across the arid lands of the country are gradually emerging, connecting the South - North, connecting the beliefs and aspirations of the Vietnamese people from Ca Mau Cape to the northern tip of the Fatherland.
To realize this goal, in recent times, the investment and expansion of expressways have brought about clear results in socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security, and protecting the environment. Wherever expressways are opened, they create space for socio-economic development, many urban areas, industrial parks, services, and tourism areas are formed, land funds are exploited effectively; travel time is shortened, transportation costs are reduced; creating new momentum to shift the economic structure of regions, connecting key economic regions with disadvantaged localities, ensuring social security, hunger eradication and poverty reduction, contributing significantly to changing the face of the country in the recent period. In addition, localities with expressways passing through all have an average GRDP growth rate higher than the whole country.
