Tay Bac University, formerly the Thai-Meo Autonomous Region Secondary Pedagogical School, was established in 1960. After 65 years of construction and development, the school has grown steadily, becoming the cradle of training quality human resources for the Northwestern provinces. From a modest beginning with only 12 teachers in 1960, the school has trained and nurtured 12 associate professors, 182 doctors and nearly 350 masters; currently there are 6 associate professors, 87 doctors and more than 200 masters working at the school. The school's training scale is growing stronger and stronger, from teacher training, the school has developed into a multi-disciplinary, multi-field university with 25 undergraduate training majors, 2 master training majors, covering key areas, meeting the development needs of the region.

Since 2001, the school has trained and awarded degrees to more than 20,000 full-time bachelors, nearly 6,000 college bachelors, more than 17,000 part-time bachelors, and hundreds of masters. In parallel with training, the school also promotes scientific research and technology transfer; Vietnamese language and professional training for Lao international students. In Decision No. 452/QD-TTg dated February 27, 2025 of the Prime Minister on approving the Planning of the network of higher education and pedagogical institutions for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 , Tay Bac University is identified as one of 14 key institutions for teacher training and development into a regional university after 2030.

Speaking at the ceremony, comrade Lo Minh Hung praised, acknowledged and expressed deep gratitude for the great contributions of generations of cadres, lecturers and students of Tay Bac University to the cause of education - training and development of high-quality human resources for Son La province and the Northwest region. In response to new requirements, he requested the school to continue promoting its achievements and results, focusing on consolidating the organizational structure, building and developing the school in the direction of a multi-disciplinary, autonomous, internationally integrated and sustainable regional university. Developing key training groups, associated with research - technology transfer and regional advantages, focusing on training teachers. Promoting comprehensive digital transformation in university administration, training and scientific research; developing a team of high-quality lecturers and scientists... to build Tay Bac University to increasingly develop, worthy of being the university of the Northwest region.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister awarded a Certificate of Merit to 1 individual; the Minister of Education and Training awarded Certificates of Merit to 2 collectives, recognized the title of Excellent Labor Collective to 4 collectives; the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province awarded Certificates of Merit to 2 collectives; the Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces awarded Certificates of Merit to the School collective; the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Education awarded a Certificate of Merit to the Association for the Promotion of Education of Tay Bac University.
