UEFA appointed Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs to officiate the final between PSG and Inter. As a result, Kovacs made history by becoming the first person to officiate the final of all major UEFA club competitions.
In 2022, Kovacs will officiate the first ever Conference League final. He will also referee the 2023/24 Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta. He will also officiate two matches at EURO 2024.
Sharing about this honor, Kovacs said: "I was surprised and happy to receive a call from UEFA's Chief Refereeing Officer Roberto Rosetti. This is an emotional moment after many years of tireless efforts, when being given the opportunity to referee the most prestigious club match."
"Every season I dream of refereeing a final, and the Champions League is the highest level I can achieve. I am very proud, not only for myself but also for my colleagues," he added.
Contrary to expectations of an exciting match, the match at the Allianz Arena was too one-sided. Goals from Achraf Hakimi (12') and Desrie Doue (20') helped PSG completely dominate the game, and then play with the greatest comfort in the remaining time.
In the 64th, 73rd and 86th minutes, Doune, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Mayulu took turns scoring, sealing a resounding 5-0 victory for the French champions. PSG won the Champions League for the first time in history.
