What are the benefits of red perilla leaves?

According to the Health & Life newspaper, Traditional Medicine Practitioner Tran Dang Tai - Vice Chairman of the Traditional Medicine Association of Thai Hoa town, Nghe An province - said that in folk medicine, people distinguish between two types of perilla: the red-leaved type (Perilla ocymoides var.) and the green-leaved type (purpurascens). The two types have different colors and different uses.

Perilla is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family, like most plants in the Lamiaceae family. It contains a volatile aromatic essential oil, commonly used for extracting fragrances, making medicine, or as a spice in cooking.

According to herbalist Tài, red perilla has a stronger flavor, so few people eat it raw; most people prepare it in dishes. In addition, red perilla is also used as a medicinal herb. Green perilla, on the other hand, is eaten raw as a spice.

Red perilla is rich in anthocyanins; both sides of its leaves are purplish-red, with serrated edges. This variety has a strong, distinctive aroma. In traditional medicine, this type of red perilla is used as a medicine and a natural food dye. Additionally, in Japan, red perilla is used to make a refreshing drink with a unique sweet and sour taste.

Should you drink perilla leaf tea daily?

Although perilla is good for health, experts advise against drinking too much perilla leaf tea for extended periods. Drinking too much perilla leaf tea for a long time can lead to bloating, abdominal distension, and general weakness.

You should divide the perilla leaf tea into smaller portions for each serving, and avoid drinking it for too long at any given time.

Perilla leaves also contain a lot of oxalic acid, and if consumed regularly, a large amount of oxalic acid will accumulate in the body. A high level of oxalic acid deposited in the body can easily damage the nervous and digestive systems.

Who should not drink perilla leaf tea?

Perilla leaves have a warming effect, so those with excessive internal heat should ideally avoid consuming them as it may worsen their condition. Additionally, carp and perilla should not be combined, as this can cause internal heat and lead to boils and pimples.
