Perilla leaves have a fragrant, warm taste and contain many beneficial plant compounds, such as omega-3 fatty acids in the form of ALA, polyphenols, flavonoids and other powerful antioxidants, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

In a study published in the Journal of the Japanese Society of Food Chemistry , Japanese scientists used perilla leaf powder that was microwaved under low pressure. They then gave this perilla leaf powder to mice with metabolic syndrome for 14 weeks. The results showed that the blood triglycerides, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and lipid oxidation in the mice's blood were significantly reduced.

Using perilla leaves properly can prevent the following diseases:

Cardiovascular disease

With the ability to reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and oxidative stress, perilla leaf tea can help prevent coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, and myocardial infarction. Omega-3 fatty acids in perilla leaves also contribute to maintaining stable blood pressure, improving endothelial health, and fighting inflammation in blood vessels.

Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders such as hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, overweight and obesity. Research has also shown that perilla leaves help reduce blood pressure and other cholesterol levels. This suggests that perilla leaf tea may help prevent metabolic syndrome.

Chronic inflammation and degeneration

Many chronic degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease involve chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Perilla leaves, with their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, help minimize cell damage, reduce free radicals, and support tissue protection in the liver, brain, and vascular endothelium.

To make perilla tea, people can use fresh or dried leaves. If using fresh leaves, wash them thoroughly. Put the leaves in hot water about 90-100°C and steep for 5-10 minutes. If you want to increase the active compounds, choose purple perilla leaves instead of green perilla. Purple leaves are often richer in polyphenol antioxidants.

The advantage of using fresh leaves is that perilla tea has a fresh aroma and intact essential oils. However, the polyphenol antioxidant content is easily diluted and changes depending on the freshness of the leaves. Meanwhile, using dried leaves, usually lightly dried, sun-dried or dried under low pressure, the nutrients in the leaves are more concentrated, more stable, easier to preserve and often have a higher polyphenol and flavonoid antioxidant content when used as tea, according to Medical News Today .
