Lai Chau: Heavy rain causes nearly 15 billion VND in damage

NDO - A quick report from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Lai Chau city said that on the night of May 14 and the morning of May 15, heavy rains occurred in the city, causing severe damage to infrastructure and agricultural production, with total estimated damage of about 14,847 billion VND.

Specifically, heavy rain affected more than 50 households due to water flooding into houses, collapsed fences, and landslides on the slopes behind 9 houses.

Heavy rain caused damage to public works in Lai Chau city.

Regarding infrastructure, heavy rain caused localized flooding on many roads, collapsed 3 low-voltage power poles, landslides at 9 locations on rural traffic routes. Hundreds of meters of fences of bus stations and stadiums. Rain also damaged more than 750 meters of drainage channels and 300 meters of wastewater collection pipes were eroded and washed away, causing damage of nearly 10.4 billion VND.

Agricultural production was severely affected with more than 21 hectares of fish ponds, 23 hectares of corn and more than 2 hectares of rice seedlings washed away and buried. In addition, more than 260 cattle and 1,670 poultry were killed or washed away. The total value of damage in the agricultural sector is estimated at more than 4.2 billion VND.

Immediately after the disaster, local forces were mobilized to assist people in moving their belongings to safety; at the same time, plans were made to repair damaged infrastructure works.
