Birmingham police said the shooting occurred in a busy street on Magnolia Avenue, in the Five Points South area near the University of Alabama.

Three victims died at the scene, and a fourth died later at a university hospital. Several others were seriously injured. Authorities believe there were multiple gunmen involved in the shooting.

Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said no suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday morning. The other victims were outside, on the sidewalk or in the street. Police are working to determine whether the shooters walked to the victims or drove by.

Five Points South is a popular neighborhood known for its restaurants, nightclubs, pubs and live music venues near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus, a short drive from downtown Birmingham.

Mass shootings “have more to do with culture than crime , ” Mr. Fitzgerald said, adding that “We are seeing too many arguments being resolved with guns.”

The Alabama incident adds to a list of at least 403 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, according to the gun violence monitoring agency. The agency defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, not including the shooter.
