Specialist Doctor II Phan Xuan Nam, Director of Quang Tri General Hospital, informed about cases of surgical site infections caused by rare bacteria.

This is a very positive, professional, and timely approach, clearly demonstrating the hospital's responsibility in ensuring the highest health safety for the people.

Accordingly, from July to early October 2025, the hospital performed endoscopic surgery on about 500 cases, of which about 70 cases had swelling and prolonged discharge at the surgical site from 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.

On October 13, the hospital leadership, the Infection Control Council and relevant departments held an urgent meeting, determining that this was an unexpected medical incident, and that the cause and solution needed to be urgently found. Specifically, operating room No. 2 was stopped, the entire surgical area was disinfected, the instrument sterilization process was changed, and the sterilization process was switched to centralized autoclave.

From October 22 to November 11, the Professional Council and coordinating units of the Vietnam Infection Control Association of the Ministry of Health evaluated and analyzed patient samples. Expert Tran Huu Luyen, Vice President of the Vietnam Infection Control Association, directly surveyed and analyzed the sterilization process and assessed the patient's injuries.

The results showed that the symptoms at Quang Tri General Hospital were similar to the surgical site infections recorded at Ha Giang General Hospital in 2013, when 92 patients were infected with Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) after laparoscopic surgery. From there, the expert panel determined that the cause of the incident was NTM bacteria, a rare type of bacteria that causes surgical site infections.

This is a slow-growing bacteria, difficult to detect by conventional testing and resistant to most common antibiotics, easily causing persistent damage at the surgical site. From this conclusion, Quang Tri General Hospital has coordinated with Hue Central Hospital to develop a specialized treatment regimen, implemented for cases with surgical site damage.

Specialist Doctor Phan Xuan Nam, Director of Quang Tri General Hospital, said that this was a rare medical incident, not due to professional error by the surgeon. The hospital has proactively provided transparent information, coordinated with leading experts to investigate, handle and ensure the highest safety so that patients and their families can feel secure when receiving treatment at the hospital.
