How can 5G Open RAN 'made in Vietnam' have a 'passport' to the world?

Today, November 13, Viettel High Tech Corporation and Qualcomm jointly organized an international conference with the theme “5G Open RAN Connect 2024”. This is the first Open RAN event in Vietnam. The conference focused on discussing research, development and application of the technology trend that is currently of most interest to the world telecommunications community, which is Open RAN.

The “5G Open RAN Connect 2024” conference is the first event on Open RAN in Vietnam.

The conference was attended by the world's leading telecommunications experts such as the Global Mobile Association (GSMA), Open RAN Association (ORAN Alliance), Qualcomm Group, Viettel High Tech, Viettel Networks...

Open RAN creates opportunities for new vendors

According to the speakers, the birth of Open RAN has created conditions for many partners to participate in the research and production of 5G telecommunications equipment, a playground that previously belonged to only a few manufacturers in the world. Open RAN promotes innovation, while contributing to reducing 5G infrastructure investment costs. The Open RAN trend is creating fundamental changes in the telecommunications sector, creating an open playground and creating conditions for many partners to participate in the research and development of 5G and 6G network infrastructure solutions.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nghia, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information and Communications, said that applying Open RAN technology helps Vietnamese enterprises participate in the world's 5G base station market.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nghia, Director of the Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Information and Communications), said that previously 90% of base stations (90% of more than 300,000 base stations) in Vietnam were provided by 3 suppliers: Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei. It is very difficult for a new supplier to participate. This is not because of the 4G standard issue.

In fact, 3GPP has released many LTE standards and all vendors have certifications. But it is the interoperability that makes it difficult for new vendors to enter the market.

Therefore, Viettel's decision to base its new product on Open RAN gives experts reason to hope for the participation of the Vietnamese representative in the 5G and 6G network infrastructure market. Open RAN represents a revolutionary approach in the telecommunications industry, creating an open, flexible radio access network that is not dependent on a specific supplier.

“Open RAN separates hardware and software, allowing operators to use standardized hardware and combine software solutions from multiple vendors. This not only increases flexibility but also reduces dependence on a single vendor ecosystem, and is very consistent with the Vietnamese government’s policy on sovereignty and resilience in telecommunications networks,” said Mr. Nghia.

Mr. Julian Gorman, Head of Asia-Pacific, Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), also commented: “Open RAN brings a transformative opportunity for the mobile industry to accelerate network innovation, enhance competitiveness and enable sustainable infrastructure deployment.”

Helping Vietnam's 5G base station service reach the world

At the conference, Viettel announced the commercialization of a broadcasting station that complies with the Open RAN standard and uses Qualcomm's chipset platform. These are the first steps in Vietnam's process of self-sufficiency in 5G network infrastructure technology and towards the ambition of exporting to the international market.

According to Mr. Oh Hyung Kwon, Senior Vice President and President of Asia-Pacific (APAC) of Qualcomm Technologies Inc., Viettel's journey to commercialize 5G Open RAN network based on Qualcomm's 5G RAN platform started in 2019. Since May 2022, Viettel and Qualcomm engineers have worked together to develop 5G Open RAN technology.

Mr. OH Kwon, Senior Vice President and President of Asia Pacific (APAC) region of Qualcomm Technologies Inc. shared at the conference.

The 5G Open RAN initiative is not only a milestone in Vietnam but also a global trend that represents the future of the telecommunications industry. It promotes an ecosystem of open standards and diverse vendors, enabling unprecedented innovation and flexibility.

“The event where Qualcomm President Alex Rogers met with Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung in Hanoi (2019) opened this groundbreaking collaboration. From there, strategic discussions with Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Chien, Deputy General Director of Viettel Group, Mr. Nguyen Vu Ha, CEO of Viettel High Tech, and Qualcomm leaders, including myself, helped shape our shared vision to bring breakthrough 5G experiences to Vietnam,” Mr. OH Kwon recalled.

Mr. OH Kwon also said that Qualcomm is looking forward to continuing to promote Viettel's 5G Open RAN to the global market through Qualcomm's comprehensive partnership. Based on this success, Qualcomm is committed to expanding cooperation into new areas such as AI and industrial IoT.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nghia also commented that Viettel's "commercialization" of the 5G Open Ran base station is a remarkable achievement not only for Viettel but also for the entire Vietnamese telecommunications industry. The next step Viettel needs to do is to strive to obtain certification from reputable organizations. This standard certification will be a "passport" for Viettel to enter the international market.

“The Ministry of Information and Communications has committed to playing a key role in the interoperability testing and certification program at the ITU (International Telecommunication Union). We can only promote Open RAN if we can demonstrate results and bring those results to the international community,” said Mr. Nghia.
