This is a practical activity to implement Decision 568/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on "National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms by 2030", and at the same time contributes to spreading the message of building a smoke-free living and working environment among union members and workers.
The contest contributes to changing awareness about the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and heated tobacco products on personal and community health. This is not only a contest, a media campaign, but also a reminder of responsibility to family, community, and our own breath.

The contest was launched from June 30 to August 15, 2025 on the e-magazine platform. Since its launch, the Organizing Committee has promoted communication activities through many forms, including video instructions for participation, a series of introductory articles, and analysis articles of typical models and initiatives from the grassroots. At the same time, the Magazine closely coordinated with Trade Union levels to monitor contest data by day, advised the Standing Committee of the Presidium of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and specialized departments to issue documents urging units to respond.
Those efforts helped the Contest spread widely, even though it took place in the context of the Trade Union organization streamlining its apparatus, changing its operating model and sharply reducing the number of union members.

According to statistics from the CMS system, the Contest attracted 57,307 contestants, corresponding to 57,307 essays and suggestions sent in. Of these, 3,871 contestants answered 100% of the multiple choice questions correctly. The leading units in terms of the number of participants include: Ho Chi Minh City Labor Confederation with 26,161 people; National Defense Trade Union Board 3,664 people; Vietnam Health Trade Union 3,573 people; Ninh Binh Provincial Labor Confederation 1,686 people; Vietnam Education Trade Union 1,451 people.
Not only stopping at the large quantity, the quality of the entries is the highlight of this year's Contest. Thousands of essays are highly appreciated for their investment, creativity and practicality, thereby clearly reflecting the efforts to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco at grassroots units. The initiatives and suggestions focus on 4 main content groups:
Firstly, propaganda and education to change behavior. Many models have been effectively implemented in schools and businesses such as "Smoke-free classroom" at Quang Tho Secondary School (Quang Tri), integrating refusal skills and risk identification; the "Writing letters to smokers" contest helps students send messages of love to their parents. At businesses, the movements "Smoke-free smiles", "Smoke-free coffee" or visual communication weeks in Ho Chi Minh City, Ninh Binh, E Hospital have helped union members easily access and proactively change behavior.
Second, building a smoke-free working environment. Many typical models have been replicated from practice such as "Clean Kitchen - No Smoking" at Viet Power Company (Ninh Binh), linking the commitment of employees with the emulation criteria; the initiative "Smoke-free IT - Clean Code, Clean Environment" creates a healthy working space in the office block. In particular, E Hospital is considered a model with the hanging of a system of billboards, standees, organizing communication for patients and their families, and building a network of 40 smoking cessation consultants right at the facility.
Third, support workers to quit smoking. Many initiatives are deeply humane, such as the model "Health mailbox - Sending love, quitting smoking" with letters from children. At a Viet Power factory, the number of workers smoking decreased by 50% after only 6 months thanks to spiritual support activities. Groups of "workers self-managing smoke-free environment", "Health Ambassadors" or the "21 days without smoke" challenge have created motivation and formed a community to join in quitting smoking.
Fourth, applying digital technology. Many units apply modern communication methods via official email, waiting screens, and electronic boards. Viet Power Company deploys a health monitoring application associated with the "30 days without tobacco" program, helping workers record progress and share their stories. Online forums also create an environment for exchanging experiences, in line with the digital transformation trend in unions and the needs of young workers.
At the ceremony, the Organizing Committee awarded 1 collective First Prize to the Ho Chi Minh City Labor Federation; 2 Second Prizes to the National Defense Trade Union and the Vietnam Medical Trade Union; 3 Third Prizes to the Ninh Binh Provincial Labor Federation, the Vietnam Education Trade Union and the Hai Phong City Labor Federation.

Regarding individual awards, the Organizing Committee awarded 1 First Prize, 2 Second Prizes, and 3 Third Prizes. In addition, the Jury recommended that the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund add 5 Consolation Prizes to recognize more articles with high practical value.
The contest has made an important contribution to raising awareness, promoting behavioral change and building healthy living habits among union members and workers. The initiatives obtained from the contest will continue to be researched and selected to compile into a "Trade Union Handbook on preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco", serving long-term propaganda work in the Vietnam Trade Union system.
