Spreading the spirit of exemplary veterans

Promoting the core role at the grassroots level

As Chairman of the Veterans Association of Cat Hai Special Zone, Mr. Vu Quoc Hung is always dedicated to his work and closely attached to the grassroots. In the period of 2020-2025, he and the Association effectively implemented emulation movements, linking the Association's work with the tasks of socio-economic development, environmental protection and maritime security.

In the new rural construction program, Mr. Hung mobilized 59 members to donate more than 2,300 square meters of land, mobilized 402 million VND from socialization to support the fund for the poor and support people affected by natural disasters; coordinated the implementation of the program "Green Sunday for a green island district", and built the Veterans Club to protect the environment as a central-level model.

Always upholding the spirit of self-reliance, self-improvement, and helping each other in economic development, Mr. Hung actively expanded and developed forms of capital mobilization, helping 630 members borrow more than 44 billion VND for production and business, doubling compared to the previous period, and members' lives were increasingly improved. Mr. Hung said that doing Association work must be both exemplary and close to the people, taking practical actions to spread the spirit of exemplary war veterans.

In Vinh Lai commune, when talking about the movement of war veterans who do well in the economy, we cannot help but mention the Vice President of the War Veterans Association of the commune, Nguyen Van Thoang, who has been involved for many years and contributed to making the movement a bright spot. Coming from a purely agricultural commune, where members' lives are still difficult, Mr. Thoang wondered how to make it so that former soldiers no longer have to worry about food and clothing. From that thought, he and the Executive Committee of the Association built a program to support members in doing business in a systematic way, not only mobilizing access to capital but also organizing technical training, supporting land consolidation, and developing suitable production models.

Thanks to creative and drastic ways of doing things, up to now, Vinh Lai has 72 economic models owned by war veterans, an increase of 52 models compared to 2021. The rate of poor war veteran households has decreased sharply from 20 households to 2 households, while the rate of well-off households has reached more than 82%.

In Le Chan ward, veteran Bui Duc Hai, member of the Standing Committee of the Ward Veterans Association, has made silent contributions to maintaining security, order and traffic safety in the area. From the models of "Safe railway", "Traffic safety school gate" to "Linking the Veterans Association with the Fatherland Front and the Police" at the hospital gate and the roads and central strip of the city, Mr. Hai and 36 members of the Ward Veterans Association are on duty, patrolling every day, providing 25 drug reports, mobilizing the reconciliation of 216 clashes, supporting 375 emergency patients without relatives...

Over the past 5 years, the Association has collected 28 tons of waste, maintained environmental sanitation, regulated traffic flow during rush hours, and prevented congestion at important intersections.

Innovation, creativity, linking competition with digital transformation

With the spirit of "exemplary, responsible, effective", the City's Veterans Association at all levels actively responded to and effectively and qualitatively implemented emulation movements launched by the Government and the City. Over the past 5 years, the Association at all levels has maintained 428 skillful mass mobilization models, hundreds of projects and tasks to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas. Notable models include "Veterans helping each other to eliminate poverty and do good business"; "Mobilizing socialization to build and repair houses of comradely affection"; "Clean, green, beautiful roads, security, order, traffic safety"; "Exemplary veterans giving advice to contribute to building new rural areas and civilized urban areas".

From the models, the city's War Veterans Association members donated more than 12,700 square meters of land, 11,790 working days, contributed money and materials worth nearly 2 billion VND to renovate and repair 18 km of rural roads, 2.5 km of irrigation canals; built 2 bridges and culverts; protected 181 hectares of forest; planted 10,500 trees.

In the movement "War veterans help each other reduce poverty and do good business", the Association at all levels encourages and creates all conditions for near-poor families of War veterans to access support policies and regimes of the State and localities. The Association has entrusted loans from the Social Policy Bank to more than 19,600 households with outstanding loans of more than VND 2,000 billion, creating jobs for 50,192 workers who are children of members and local people. At the same time, it supports the repair and construction of 98 "Comradely affection" houses with a total value of more than VND 3.34 billion to give to War veterans in difficulty.

According to Vice President of the City Veterans Association Vu Huu Keo, in the coming time, the Association will promote the implementation of Directive 41 of the Politburo on emulation and commendation work; promote the implementation of the "Exemplary Veterans" movement associated with studying and following the ideology, morality and style of Ho Chi Minh. The Association focuses on digital transformation in its activities; continue to discover, foster and replicate good models, advanced examples, spread the values of the patriotic emulation movement, contribute to building and protecting the Party and the political system, and develop the city's socio-economy.
