Listen to the things that are difficult for children to say.

Last summer, every Saturday morning, the yard of Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Hai Chau Ward) was filled with the laughter of students participating in a free life skills class taught by Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Loan, the school's Vice Principal.

Here, difficult things to say between parents and children are shared and opened up with empathy and closeness, helping children learn to listen, understand and grow up.

Accompanying puberty

After many years of working with students, having the opportunity to get close to them and listen to their confidences, Ms. Thuy Loan built skill clubs and later life skills classes for children.

Initially, the classroom was to support teaching, but gradually it became a place to connect and accompany parents and students.

The class was organized by Ms. Loan for free from the very first days and for nearly 10 years, she has maintained a regular summer course for students from 9 to 13 years old.

Each class has about 40 students, coming from many different schools in the city. Each course has necessary life skills education content for each age group.

Lessons are made more concrete and lively through experiential games, role-playing, group discussions, group practice, individual practice, debates...

After being prompted, learning and discussing difficult issues, Minh Khue, a 7th grade student at Nguyen Hue Secondary School, expressed that in the past she was easily frustrated when she could not achieve what she wanted, but after the teacher shared how to control her emotions, she learned how to adjust her emotions.

Bao Han, a 6th grade student at a secondary school in Hai Chau ward, is excited because she used to use social networks but did not know how to control her time or distinguish between right and wrong information. Now she is more confident after learning how to use social networks safely.

Having a child attending a life skills class this summer, Mr. Cao Minh (An Hai ward) expressed: "Children in puberty have many changes in their psychology and physiology, and there are private things that are difficult to talk about and are shy to tell their parents.

Through the class, I am very happy to see that my child has gained many more skills, changed in the way he talks and behaves with his parents and friends, and also knows how to love himself and respect others...".

Sowing seeds to nurture the future

According to Ms. Thuy Loan, at puberty, children can learn many useful things, but are also easily influenced by incorrect information that is not age-appropriate.

Therefore, children need the support of their families and need to be properly educated about gender, reproductive health... to avoid abuse, access to false information channels, and unsafe relationships.

With sensitive topics such as puberty and gender, Ms. Loan often starts with familiar stories, illustrative examples, or suggestive games to help children feel comfortable and safe when sharing.

“I want students to understand that the issues they consider “sensitive” or “difficult to talk about” are normal and everyone needs to know how to protect themselves. I encourage students to ask questions and present situations so that the whole class can discuss how to handle them. Thanks to an open and respectful approach, students overcome their shyness and confidently speak up about difficult things,” said Ms. Loan.

Ms. Loan also suggested that in order for children to be confident, parents should equip themselves with knowledge about teenage psychology, gender, life skills, and become their children's companions.

Parents should be patient and create a sense of security and trust in their children so that they can share everything, including sensitive matters. When parents listen and do not avoid, children will understand that these are necessary knowledge.

Parents can also help their children select reliable information, read books, watch videos , participate in skill classes, etc. so that their children can acquire knowledge in a healthy environment, grow up in safety, and grow up happily.
