At the reception, Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Hoai Anh expressed his delight when Mr. Marc E. Knapper - US Ambassador to Vietnam, and his delegation visited and paid a courtesy call in the province. At the same time, the Provincial Party Secretary was also excited about the strong progress in the relationship between the two countries in all fields, especially at a time when both countries are carrying out many practical activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations (July 1995) and 2 years of upgrading the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (September 2023).
Introducing an overview of Binh Thuan province, the Provincial Party Secretary said: In recent years, with the attention of the Central Government, the province has been focusing resources on investing in infrastructure development, domestic and foreign transportation. Up to now, the province's transportation system has been basically connected smoothly with all types of roads (including expressways), railways, waterways and soon, airways and in the more distant future, there will be a high-speed railway and 2 terminals located in Binh Thuan. In addition, the province is promoting the establishment of a 4E-class civil airport to receive domestic flights at Phan Thiet airport.
In terms of economy , Binh Thuan province has been developing its economy on three pillars: industry - tourism - agriculture, gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture and increasing the proportion of industry and services. In terms of industry, the province has advantages in developing energy, including renewable energy projects such as wind power, solar power and the upcoming Son My II LNG power project invested by the US AES Group. The Provincial Party Secretary emphasized: Developing clean energy is a consistent policy of the Party and the State and the province identifies this as a very important energy project, so in the past, Binh Thuan has created conditions and worked with investors to remove difficulties to promote the project's implementation on schedule.
Regarding investment attraction, the province currently has 5 FDI projects with capital from the United States. Notably, the AES Group (USA) was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam to invest in the BOT project of Son My II LNG Thermal Power Plant in 2022 with a capacity of 2,250 MW, total investment capital of about 2.1 billion USD.
The Provincial Party Secretary emphasized that Binh Thuan still has great potential and advantages, to further promote the strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States, hoping that the US Ambassador will pay attention, inform, and act as a bridge to introduce the development potential of Binh Thuan province so that US businesses can boldly invest in Binh Thuan in the coming time. In addition, the province wishes to attract strategic and experienced investors to develop high-end tourism types and products, not only meeting the needs of domestic tourists, but also being an attractive destination for international visitors with Mui Ne National Tourist Area, recognized by the Government as a tourist area of international and regional stature.
At the reception, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper thanked the province for its warm welcome to the delegation. He expressed his impression of the province's potential and advantages and said that this is the basis for Binh Thuan to develop more strongly in the near future. The Ambassador emphasized that 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States, representing a historic milestone in the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the United States. The Ambassador hopes that during his term in Vietnam, the Son My II LNG Thermal Power Project will be implemented, contributing to helping people access more clean energy sources. Binh Thuan is the province with the largest renewable energy potential in Vietnam. Therefore, with abundant labor resources, dynamic legal mechanisms, digital government and the two Son My 1 and 2 projects coming into operation on schedule, it will be a strong message to help US investors invest in Binh Thuan in the future to implement other projects. Thereby, contributing to promoting cooperation between the US - Vietnam in general and with Binh Thuan province in particular in the coming time. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper promised to make efforts to connect, introduce and promote information about Binh Thuan to US partners, businesses and investors.
Speaking more about the Son My II LNG Thermal Power Project, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Do Huu Huy said that when the Ministry of Industry and Trade approves this project this year, the project will start construction in 2026 and be operational in 2028 on schedule. The Provincial People's Committee will establish a Working Group to resolve land clearance issues to promote early implementation of the project. The province identifies the Son My II LNG project as a very important energy project, along with the Son My I project, which will contribute to increasing Binh Thuan's power generation capacity to about 11,000 MW by 2030. Binh Thuan will urgently accompany the US investor to implement the next steps, and efforts will be made to speed up the progress of matters under the authority of the locality, such as land clearance and land acquisition to hand over to the investor.
On behalf of the provincial leaders, Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Hoai Anh expressed his joy and affirmed that the activities of Ambassador Marc E. Knapper in Binh Thuan demonstrated the affection and concern of the US Government for the people of Binh Thuan province and wished for the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries Vietnam and the US to be increasingly strong and effective for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
