Poor workers make a living during the rainy season

Báo Bạc LiêuBáo Bạc Liêu10/08/2023

During the rainy season, while many people stay home and rest, limiting their trips, there are still many people who have to brave the rain and wind to make a living. Heavy rain and flooding make the poor workers' steps even more difficult and arduous.

Women wade through rain and flood water to sell goods.

Making a living is full of hardships.

Regardless of rain or shine, every day starting at 6am, Ms. Kim Nhu (Hamlet 10, Ward 1, Bac Lieu City) pushes a cart full of peanuts, corn and boiled bananas out of her house. Ms. Nhu shared: “Sometimes it rains heavily and the strong wind stings my face, but I still try to brave the rain to sell. When it rains, people are afraid to go out, so I have to work hard to go into deep alleys and small lanes to serve customers. Although the stall is small, it is the main income for my family of 5.”

On rainy days, on street corners and porches, what catches the eye of passersby is the image of motorbike taxi drivers sitting huddled, patiently waiting for customers, but sometimes they sit for hours without seeing any customers. Although his house is in Hung Hoi commune (Vinh Loi district), for more than 20 years, regardless of the sun or rain, every day from early morning, Mr. Nguyen Van Loc has been present at the corner of Tran Huynh street (Ward 7, Bac Lieu city) with his rickshaw. When it rains heavily, he often wears a thin raincoat and hides under the porch of a house to wait for customers. "The rickshaw job now mainly involves transporting goods, some days I earn 50,000 - 100,000 VND, but there are also days when I can't make a single trip. On days of heavy rain and deep flooding, transporting goods is very difficult because it mainly uses human power, I always tell myself to try my best to earn a living."

On flooded streets and heavy rains, the feet of people who earn their living by selling goods on the street, selling lottery tickets, etc. still walk steadily. They work hard to make a living, to take care of their families and their children's education. On rainy days like these, they just hope for the sky to clear up so that their life will be less difficult.

Efforts for "rice pot"

For poor workers in rural areas, regardless of storms and rain, they still work hard every day on rivers, fields, and beaches to make a living.

For over 20 years, every 11pm, Mrs. Cam Hang and her husband (Phuoc Long district) leave home, run their boat along the river bank to catch fish, and return home at 4am to sort the fish and bring them to the market to sell. In recent days, it has been raining heavily and the wind is strong, the boat has been rocking on the river, the rainwater has poured down, and Mrs. Hang and her husband have been taking turns bailing water without stopping. Despite all the hard work, the couple dare not take a day off, because the expenses of the entire family of four depend on fishing for this unstable income.

Towards the end of the year, the rain and storms become more frequent, the tides rise and last for many days in a row, making the poor people's life more difficult. Although earning a living on rainy days is hard, and the income is even low, they still work diligently because for poor workers like them, having a job and income on rainy days is a blessing. When they have regular work, they can save up the little money they have to take care of their families, send their children to school, and most importantly, not let themselves and their families become a burden to society.
