Hamburg airport in northern Germany was closed after an armed man drove onto the runway and took children hostage.
German media quoted police as saying that at around 8pm on November 4, a man drove his car through the security gate at Hamburg airport, approached the aircraft parking lot and took a 4-year-old girl hostage. The child is believed to be his own.
"Negotiations are ongoing," police said on social media platform X, nearly 15 hours after the incident.

The airport management board also announced on the morning of November 5 that "police operations continue, air traffic remains suspended until further notice."
The man fired two shots into the air and threw two burning glass bottles out of the car. He remained in the car with the girl, parked under a Turkish Airlines plane.
"We believe that the child is in good health," police spokeswoman Sandra Levgruen told local television channel NDR . "That's what we can see and gather from the phone conversation with the person responsible for what happened. We can hear the child in the back seat."
"I don't want to talk about the child's mental state," she added. "We are constantly talking, negotiating with the father and trying to find a peaceful solution."
Authorities said a custody dispute was believed to have led to the incident and the man's wife called police to report the kidnapping.
"We are on scene with a large emergency response team," police posted earlier on the X platform.
Levgruen said the fact that the father remained in contact with the authorities for so long was a "very good sign."
