The European Film Festival has just returned to audiences in Vietnam in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from November 14-28. Among the 18 films screened, there are 2 works that are highly appreciated by international audiences: “Vân có ngày mai” (There's Still Tomorrow ) and “Cô bé tim lanh” (The Quiet Girl ).

The two films received tens of thousands of reviews on the IMDb platform, with a positive score: 7.7/10.

"Adventurous and cheesy, simple and beautiful "

“Tomorrow Remains” (Italy, 2023) is one of the most audience-friendly titles at this year's festival, scoring 7.7 points from more than 13,000 audience reviews.

The film takes on the theme of feminism, about the oppression of women in Italian society after World War II. However, director Paola Cortellesi has a bright way of expressing it, enough to make viewers curious and interested to see how she handles the film.

The main character is Delia - a middle-aged wife who often suffers from her husband's "physical and physical abuse." This violent mindset has been passed down through generations, because even her father-in-law supports his son's way of "teaching his wife with his fists."

Delia was controlled in many ways and accepted her miserable fate. But she did not want her daughter to suffer like her. Then, the appearance of a mysterious document changed the lives of both mother and daughter.

According to critic Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian (UK), the author has succeeded in building “breathtaking suspense,” blending the personal story with the political context and making the two “blend together like a resonant chord.”

Although the subject is not new, Paola Cortellesi has been praised for her performance, especially since this is her first feature film. Writer Luis Martinez of El Mundo (Spain's second largest daily newspaper) called the director a cinematic prodigy, "at once adventurous and sentimental, simple and beautiful."

“Tomorrow Remains” was released in October 2023 and quickly became the highest-grossing domestic film after COVID-19, the 10th highest in the history of Italian cinema and reminiscent of many legendary Italian filmmakers such as Vittorio De Sica and Federico Fellini.

“Best Irish film to date”

With a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, “Quiet Girl” (2022) is the first Irish film to receive an Oscar nomination. The film has a score of 7.7 from more than 24,000 reviews on IMDb.

Cáit - the main character in the film comes from an unhappy family, so she is very quiet. One summer in the early 1980s, she was sent to the home of strange relatives. Under the care of the couple, Cait gradually opened up to her surroundings and adapted to her new life.

And here, she discovered another secret about herself and her family.

The film is a drama, with a healing direction for psychological trauma from childhood. The convincing performance of Catherine Clinch (the female lead) brought her an Irish National Film and Television Award when she was not yet 14 years old.

On The Washington Post's page, author Michael O'Sullivan gave the film a perfect score of 4/4: "In a noisy world full of noisy, chaotic movies, 'The Quiet Girl' still has the loudest voice without having to say anything."

Many IMDb users also said that the film’s quietness and simplicity made it beautiful. Comments from user Nickphelan (198 votes for, 9 votes against) also commented that “This is simply the best Irish film I have ever seen” and emphasized the “Irishness” of the film, rather than just the language spoken in it./.

In addition to the two films mentioned above, some other works with IMDb scores of 7/10 or higher (usually considered good or quite good) include: "Playground" , "The Peasants" and "20,000 species of bees" . The films have won or been screened at many international awards, some of which have been to the "top 3" film festivals (Berlin, Cannes, Venice).
