International Cycling Union eyes 'world super championship'

The dates have been confirmed: 24 August to 5 September – slightly earlier than usual as ICC aims to create a ‘super world championship’, with all events taking place in the same area, spread across 12 venues. All cyclists, from amateurs to professionals, will be competing for the coveted rainbow jersey. In total, nearly 300 trophies will be up for grabs.

International Cycling Union eyes 'world super championship'

This latest ambitious move by the International Cycling Union was announced at a press conference held by the international governing body at what will be the epicentre of the cycling world for the next five months.

Sallanches, a town in France’s Haute-Savoie region, has a long cycling tradition and is expected to pull out all the stops to host an event that will exceed all expectations, especially since the races will be broadcast live. Of course, the scale of infrastructure required will also be far greater than any previous edition.

The closest comparison is the 2023 edition in Glasgow and across Scotland (UK), which brings together 13 International Cycling Union World Championships in 09 venues. On that occasion, 220 rainbow jerseys were awarded.

Specific dates and schedules for each event have yet to be confirmed. The exact routes are still unknown, but it promises to be another formidable challenge for the most renowned cyclists.

This will be the third time Sallanches has hosted the world championships, after 1964 and 1980. In 1980, local hero Bernard Hinault – a five-time Tour de France winner and the last Frenchman to win the world's greatest race – won his only world title on home soil.

Cycling fans are eagerly awaiting a groundbreaking edition that will surpass traditional formats in two seasons.
