Some diplomatic sources said on June 27 that the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) will end on June 30.
The information was released ahead of a vote by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on a draft resolution that would allow the Mission's 13,000 troops to withdraw within six months of the deadline.
The planned end of MINUSMA comes after years of deteriorating relations between the UN and Mali’s military government. Tensions reached a boiling point this month when Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop demanded that MINUSMA leave his country immediately.

The Mission's operations have also been suspended due to Malian government restrictions since 2021. MINUSMA is credited with playing a key role in protecting civilians against an Islamist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives.
According to the draft, MINUSMA would have until December 31 to carry out an “orderly and safe” withdrawal, which the Security Council would consider by October 30. The council could then “consider a revised timetable in consultation with Mali, if necessary.” The mission’s activities would be reduced to providing security for UN personnel, facilities and convoys. MINUSMA would provide medical evacuation services for UN personnel.
But the draft will also allow MINUSMA, until the end of the year, to respond to imminent threats of violence against civilians and to contribute to the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilian-led authorities in their vicinity. Specific timing and locations will be decided in consultation with the Malian authorities.
The French-drafted resolution is still being discussed by the 15-member council, but diplomats said no major changes were expected before a vote scheduled for June 29. To pass, the resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from any of the permanent members.
“In line with the Security Council decision, the UN stands ready to engage with the Malian authorities on MINUSMA’s withdrawal plan,” a MINUSMA spokesperson said. He added that internal discussions were underway.
