On October 19, the European Union announced an investigation into social networks Facebook and TikTok to prevent the spread of misinformation about the conflict between the Islamic movement Hamas and Israel.
Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect in August, the biggest tech companies face additional obligations to prevent more illegal content from spreading on their platforms or risk hefty fines. The DSA is being tested by the EU in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Depending on the tech companies’ responses, Brussels could decide to open formal proceedings against Meta or TikTok and impose fines for “inaccurate, incomplete or misleading information that increases stigma in certain communities and sows social unrest,” according to My Journal Courier.
