On May 7, Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien received Mr. Marc E. Knapper, US Ambassador to Vietnam, to promote the negotiation process to handle bilateral economic and trade issues.
Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, and suggested that the US promote the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace , cooperation and sustainable development, for the development of each country and stability in the region.
Promoting two complementary economies
This is the basis for promoting Vietnam-US trade in a harmonious, sustainable and long-term direction, ensuring that it does not violate international commitments of which Vietnam is a member, does not affect relations with other partners, and is in line with the direction agreed upon by the two countries' senior leaders.
Given the complementary nature of the two economies, according to Mr. Dien, this is an important feature that helps economic and trade cooperation between the two countries develop more and more strongly. Therefore, the two countries need to support businesses in promptly removing difficulties and obstacles, facilitating cooperation projects, as well as the purchase and sale of essential products, supplementing each other's demand for goods.
Supporting businesses should be considered a practical action to help promote economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries in a substantive manner, increasingly deepening and becoming more effective, contributing towards a harmonious and sustainable trade balance.
Ambassador Marc E. Knapper appreciated Vietnam's proactive, goodwill, and constructive moves, and explained that the new US trade policy was established to further promote trade and investment, protect economic security, national security, and US workers.
Accordingly, the policies are not intended to harm partner countries. Although there are many challenges ahead, the ambassador believes that with goodwill, the negotiation process between the two countries will achieve positive results, bringing benefits to the people and the business community.

Speed up trade deals
This afternoon, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien also chaired a working session with corporations, general companies, and large enterprises of Vietnam to implement the Prime Minister's direction on promoting the implementation of trade agreements towards balancing the trade balance between the US and Vietnam.
Attending the meeting were leaders of Vietnam Energy - Industry Group (PVN), Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex), Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV Gas), Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV);
Vietnam Chemical Group, Vietnam Airlines Corporation, Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company, Truong Hai Industrial Group (THACO Industry), Military Industry and Telecommunications Group (Viettel), Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT)...
Over the years, these corporations have imported a large number of products such as aircraft, machinery, equipment, turbines for gas-fired power plants, power transmission systems, GPU chips, raw materials, etc. from the US, worth up to billions of dollars.
At the meeting, the corporations reported on the implementation of signed purchasing agreements in 2025; assessed and forecasted the demand for imports, procurement of equipment, goods and services, and raw materials in which the US has strengths.
According to the leaders of the corporations, from now until June 2025, they will increase meetings and work with American partners to promote contracts to realize signed agreements and memorandums of understanding.
From the comments, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien said that Vietnam has a need to purchase goods, equipment and services from the US in large quantities, with high and stable value. These are all products that the US has strengths in and that Vietnam has a need for. However, trade between the two countries has not really matched their potential.
According to Mr. Dien, both sides need to urgently review and promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, creating favorable conditions for businesses in buying and selling essential products, supplementing each other's demand for goods.
Mr. Dien suggested that businesses need to be more proactive to realize the great potential. This is a practical action to help promote economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries in a substantive manner, increasingly deepening and becoming more effective, contributing towards a harmonious and sustainable trade balance.
