A series of Hanoi students hospitalized due to food poisoning, Hanoi urgently directs

Authorities determined that the cause of 72 students from Kim Giang Primary School (Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi) being hospitalized after a field trip was food poisoning.

Regarding the case of Kim Giang Primary School students being hospitalized after a field trip, on March 30, the Hanoi Department of Health said the initial cause of 72 students being hospitalized was due to staphylococcus aureus bacteria contaminating chicken meat in the meal.

Authorities requested Thanh Xuan District to continue directing the investigation at the Kim Giang Primary School kitchen, including reviewing the cause of staphylococcus aureus bacteria contaminating chicken meat during transportation or during processing.

On the same day, the Hanoi People's Committee issued a document requesting the Hanoi Department of Health, Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and People's Committees of districts, towns and cities in the city to strengthen food safety and hygiene management.

The Hanoi People's Committee requested the Hanoi Department of Health to coordinate with Thanh Xuan District and Gia Lam District (Hanoi) to continue verifying and clarifying the origin of the food poisoning at Kim Giang Primary School; strengthen inspection, supervision, investigation, and sample collection to find the cause of the poisoning; and monitor and supervise the development of the poisoning incident until it ends.

Preside over and coordinate with the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the People's Committees of districts, towns, and related units to promote propaganda and raise awareness of organizations and individuals in enforcing the law on food safety; promptly inform about high-quality safe food supply chains and establishments that potentially violate food safety and security regulations; improve the capacity to prevent and proactively handle food poisoning and foodborne diseases, and minimize poisoning caused by consuming unsafe food.

Strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of work to ensure security, food safety, facility hygiene, equipment hygiene, personal hygiene, origin of raw materials used in production, product quality; fight against and strictly handle organizations, individuals, production and business establishments that violate regulations on security, food safety and hygiene.

Request the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade and the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to closely coordinate with the Hanoi Department of Health and People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to strengthen market inspection and control; pay attention to the origin and labeling of products circulating on the market, especially in markets, supermarkets and commercial centers according to the functions and tasks of the industry.

Hanoi People's Committee directed Thanh Xuan District People's Committee to request the collective kitchen of Kim Giang Primary School to temporarily suspend operations to remedy food poisoning; check and review the entire process from the stage of importing raw materials, processing, preserving, dividing food, transporting food and determining the cause of food poisoning related to the implementation process.

At the same time, strengthen inspections of collective kitchens at schools and high-risk production facilities, especially unlicensed food businesses, strictly handle violators and destroy food of unknown origin.

Previously, at around 6:45 a.m. on March 28, Kim Giang Primary School organized a field trip for 915 students from grades 1 and 2 to the Green Sail Educational Farm (Gia Lam District). Lunch was cooked at the school and transported to the experience location for students to have lunch at 11:00 a.m. The students' lunch dishes included: fried rice, fried chicken fillet, french fries, sour soup with meat, and Kinh Do Oreo cookies.

After returning to school from the farm, some students showed signs of stomachache and vomiting, 2 students had diarrhea 2-3 times. From 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm on the same day, a total of 72 students with the same symptoms of vomiting, nausea, and stomachache were transferred to the following hospitals: Bach Mai Hospital, Dong Da Hospital, and Construction Hospital.
