In an interview with AFP (France), Benghazi government spokesman Mohamed Massoud confirmed that floods and torrential rains in Derna city, Jabal al-Akhdar region and the suburbs of Al-Marj city have claimed the lives of 150 people. In addition, this natural disaster has also caused great material damage.

Massoud added that Osama Hamad, head of the eastern Libyan government, led a rescue committee and several ministers to Derna to assess the damage. Earlier in the day, authorities had declared Derna a “disaster zone.” Rescue teams have been deployed in the city, 900km east of the capital Tripoli.

Storm Daniel hit eastern Libya on the afternoon of September 10, particularly the coastal town of Jabal al-Akhdar and the city of Benghazi. Authorities in these areas imposed a curfew and ordered schools to close for several days. Experts described Storm Daniel as bringing extreme rainfall over a 24-hour period. The storm has also hit parts of Greece, Türkiye and Bulgaria in recent days, killing at least 27 people.

Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah has ordered all state agencies to “immediately remedy” the damage and prevent flooding in eastern cities. Meanwhile, the United Nations representative in Libya said it was closely monitoring the storm and would provide emergency relief and support response efforts at the national and local levels.
