Liverpool rejected a €67.5m (£58.6m) bid from Bayern for Luis Diaz earlier this summer, but talks resumed on Friday (26 July) over the Colombian's transfer. On Saturday, both parties agreed a deal that satisfied everyone: €75m (£65.6m).
Bayern's initial top target was Florian Wirtz, but he lost out to Liverpool. The German club also failed to sign Spanish winger Nico Williams, who decided to stay in Bilbao. That's why Bayern are determined to get Diaz, who can play in multiple positions across the front line.
Despite having a contract at Anfield until June 2027, Diaz has confirmed that he wants to leave this summer. Ahead of Saturday's friendly against Milan, coach Arne Slot also left the striker, who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season, out of the squad.
"This concerns the future of Lucho (Luis Diaz)," said coach Slot. "There have been a lot of rumours recently about whether he will stay or go. I can only say that he is training very well but we have made a temporary decision that Diaz will not play."
Diaz is unlikely to play for Liverpool again as talks with Bayern come to a close. The Reds signed striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for €91m a few days ago. They are also keen on Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Diaz's departure will help to speed up those plans.
In addition, the English champions are also ready to sell Darwin Nunez this summer, paving the way for Harvey Elliott if the player wants to say goodbye.
