Veteran Luong Cong Thoan was born in 1957, enlisted in 1974, and was assigned to the transport unit of Group 559 Truong Son. After the complete liberation of the South, he studied at the Intermediate Vehicle School (now the Military Technical College 1, under the General Department of Engineering, Ministry of National Defense ).
In 1979, Mr. Thoan participated in the fight to protect the northern border, working at the X23 Technical Unit, Military Region 3, serving the Kachiusa missile convoy. In 1984, during a campaign at the Vi Xuyen front ( Ha Giang ), his unit was attacked by the enemy, the weapon vehicle overturned during counter-fire, seriously injuring him. After a period of treatment, Mr. Thoan was transferred to the Technical Department, Provincial Military Command, and in 1999 he retired with the rank of major, receiving a 3/4 class disabled veteran's allowance.
Returning home with declining health and difficult economic circumstances, veteran Luong Cong Thoan did not surrender to fate. He shared: As a soldier returning to civilian life, I told myself that I could not rely on others, but had to work hard to earn a living to take care of my family.
With technical expertise in automobiles, Mr. Thoan opened a truck repair shop at home. When his health was no longer suitable for heavy work, he switched to developing a semi-industrial chicken farm model, at one point raising up to 15,000 chickens, bringing high economic efficiency, enough to raise his children and stabilize his life. When the livestock market encountered difficulties, he switched to opening a garment processing workshop. Not stopping there, he also boldly cooperated with foreign enterprises to produce supermarket bags for export.
In 2019, veteran Luong Cong Thoan invested tens of billions of VND to build a 1,000m² factory, equipped with a modern machinery system, and established Truong Phuc 979 Garment Company Limited, of which he is the Director. Currently, his company produces an average of 150,000 supermarket bags/month, with a revenue of about 20 billion VND/year. More importantly, the company has created stable jobs for 30 workers, including many demobilized soldiers and 9 people with disabilities, with an income of 5-10 million VND/month. In particular, he also arranges free accommodation for workers in difficult circumstances.
Not only is he good at business, veteran Luong Cong Thoan is also always community-oriented. He actively supports programs to build new rural areas, civilized urban areas, supports war invalids and sick soldiers, and participates in local social activities.
The example of veteran Luong Cong Thoan is a living proof that “Disabled but not useless” as President Ho Chi Minh wished. Despite his war wounds, veteran Luong Cong Thoan still lives a life full of determination, responsibility and humanity. He is not only a brave soldier in the past, but also a silent warrior on the economic front, contributing to building his homeland today.
