Royal biographer Tina Brown said King Charles "missed Harry terribly" and wanted to mend their relationship, but felt hampered by what she described as Prince William's refusal to budge in their ongoing feud.
In a New York Times op-ed, Brown said the king was "tired of his eldest son's stubborn, self-righteous attitude in family conflicts." She added that he "wants to reconcile with Harry," but that this could only happen if both sons showed an effort to reconcile.

She also mentioned Harry's 54-minute meeting with his father at Clarence House, their first face-to-face meeting in more than 19 months. Brown said that while many sources described it as a modest step toward reconciliation, the goal is still a long way from being realized.
In addition, observers have noted that Prince Harry's appearances in the UK (including charity events and a recent surprise trip to Ukraine) have been well received, which has again sparked comparisons with William and further frustrated his brother.
Brown suggests that Harry's recent public service success may have upset his brother, given the fact that Prince William still regards his brother as a "traitor" due to previous revelations in television interviews and in his memoir, Spare. In one instance, Harry said his brother attacked him when mentioning his wife, Meghan Markle.

Meanwhile, King Charles is described as being caught between Prince Harry and Prince William. On the one hand, insiders insist he wants his youngest son back in the royal family (at least personally), but on the other, royal officials remain adamant that Harry cannot have any sort of "half-in" royal role.
