Controversial collision in Liverpool's loss to MU. |
In Liverpool's loss to MU at Anfield, referee Michael Oliver decided not to stop the match even though Alexis Mac Allister showed signs of a head injury after a strong collision with teammate Virgil van Dijk.
In the second minute, Van Dijk jumped high to compete for the ball in the air with Bryan Mbeumo, accidentally colliding with Mac Allister. The Argentine midfielder fell to the ground, holding his head in pain, while Van Dijk was also stunned. However, referee Oliver let the match continue instead of blowing the whistle to check the player's condition.
Just seconds later, the "Red Devils" organized a quick attack. Bruno Fernandes passed the ball to Amad Diallo who ran down and passed to Mbeumo who finished accurately to open the score amid fierce reactions from Liverpool players and fans.
Many people believe that the referee was wrong in not stopping the match to ensure the safety of a player with a head injury, which is clearly stipulated in the FIFA Laws of the Game. Accordingly, if there is a suspicion of a head injury, the referee is forced to stop the match so that the medical team can enter the field to check.
However, the Premier League Match Operations Center confirmed: "VAR was not used in this incident because there was no clear foul. This was a situation directly assessed and decided on the spot by referee Michael Oliver."
However, many fans still do not agree with the explanation, especially when the situation directly led to the opening goal for MU, changing the situation of the dramatic English derby at Anfield.
