New home, new life

Yen Lam is a particularly difficult highland commune, with more than 72% of the population being ethnic minorities, mainly Mong and Dao people. The main income of the people depends on agricultural and forestry production, so life is still full of deprivation. Previously, many households still had to live in temporary, seriously degraded houses.

Officials, organizations and local people help build houses for poor households in Yen Lam commune (Ham Yen).

Implementing Project 308 of the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province on eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses for poor households in the period of 2021 - 2025, Yen Lam commune has carefully reviewed and developed a plan to support each household, from preparing documents to construction and monitoring the progress of housing construction.

Many poor households in particularly difficult circumstances have received timely support, such as Ms. Hoang Thi Than, Ngoa village. As a single mother without a stable job, for many years she and her young child had to live in a dilapidated thatched house. In 2024, thanks to support from the program, she was able to build a new, solid house with an area of 70 square meters. "I never thought that one day I would have a solid house like this. Now the two of us have a safe place to live, no longer worrying about rain or sun," Ms. Than shared.

Similarly, the family of Mr. Dang Van Huong, Nac Con 1 village, with 50 million VND in support, along with the help of relatives and friends, he built a stilt house of more than 100 square meters. Mr. Huong himself has brain flukes, the family's circumstances are very difficult, now has a stable place to live, the children have a better space to study and live.

As for Mr. Hoang Van Pao's family in Ngoi Sen village, in their old age, he and his wife thought they could only live temporarily with their children and grandchildren in a cramped old house, with 7 people living together. Thanks to the support of 70 million VND, his family was able to build a new house of 80 m2, contributing to stabilizing their lives and ensuring long-term economic development.

Eliminate temporary houses, reach the new rural destination

In 2024 alone, Yen Lam commune completed the construction of 20 new houses for poor households, contributing to eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses in the area.

Comrade Vu Van Thinh, Chairman of Yen Lam Commune People's Committee said: "When starting to implement the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, we clearly determined that this is not only a political task, but also a direct responsibility for people's lives. Many poor households really want to build houses but do not have counterpart capital, are not suitable for the age of building a house according to folk beliefs, or are afraid of change. The commune government has organized many village meetings, combined propaganda, and visited each household to encourage and remove difficulties. The story of one family doing it, another seeing it and determined to follow also becomes a positive ripple effect."

According to comrade Thinh, to complete the set goals, the commune has mobilized many support resources, including funding from the State budget, social mobilization resources, socio-political organizations, businesses, etc. The synchronous coordination between resources and the people helps ensure the progress and quality of building new houses for poor households.

With the efforts of the entire political system and the consensus of the people, Yen Lam commune has completed the criteria for residential housing, which is one of the difficult criteria in building a new rural area. With the completion of 19/19 criteria, the commune has been officially recognized as meeting the new rural standards.

The new houses in Yen Lam not only provide a safe home, but also motivate poor households to continue to improve their lives.
