Home for the less fortunate

For more than two decades, the Long An Province Social Work Center has become a solid “support” for hundreds of lonely elderly people, people with disabilities, people with mental illness, orphans and even those who have lost their way in life. The center is like a home filled with love for the less fortunate.

Cultivate love

Ms. Nguyen Thi Luy (born in 1952) suffered from polio at the age of 2, the after-effects of which made it difficult for her to walk. When she was accepted and cared for by the provincial Social Work Center, with the perseverance and care of the staff , Ms. Luy gradually opened her heart and put aside her previous complexes.

During the 26 years she lived at the Center, she no longer had to worry about meals or sleep. Daily activities and conversations with the staff at the Center gradually became the bond between her and the people around her.

Despite her advanced age and declining health, she still has a smile on her face. Every time there is a group activity or performance, she tries to participate in her wheelchair, not only for fun but also to spread positive energy to those in the same situation.

In their old age, when they should be living with their children and grandchildren, the people here quietly stay attached to the Center - the place they call their "second home". They do not feel lonely because here, they find each other among life stories, old songs sung in common activities.

Mr. Tran Chi Dung - who has been with the Center for more than 13 years, shared: “Here, we can chat, sing, and play sports . Although we are not related by blood, everyone is very close. I myself used to suffer from headaches and insomnia. However, thanks to a regular lifestyle and eating on time, I feel better and my condition has improved.”

The center is like a peaceful place, where the disadvantaged are cared for with all kindness, love and sincere sharing. Many of them have gone through days of lacking affection and having no place to rely on, but here, they are welcomed, listened to and gradually regain the feeling of living in the arms of a big family.

So that no one is left behind

“Students” play badminton during morning exercise

Over the years, the provincial Social Work Center has always maintained morning exercise activities for the elderly and mentally ill, helping them improve their physical strength and stabilize their mental health. Since the beginning of 2025, physical therapy exercises have been organized regularly with nearly 400 sessions, effectively supporting the recovery process of patients.

According to the Director of the Provincial Social Work Center - Le Van An, the Center is taking care of more than 420 people, including 371 people with mental disabilities. In addition to monitoring daily health developments, taking subjects for regular medical check-ups and tests, the Center pays special attention to taking care of their mental life. In particular, regularly organizing cultural - artistic, physical - sports activities to help subjects live happily, live healthily and have more determination in life.

The Center also promotes social mobilization to mobilize more resources to support activities to care for the lives of the disadvantaged. In the first quarter of 2025, the Center welcomed more than 340 organizations and individuals to visit and present gifts with a total amount of money and converted goods worth more than 1.8 billion VND. The activities are not only a source of practical material support but also demonstrate the community's concern and spread of love for the less fortunate.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thuy (Ward 1, Tan An City) is one of the people who regularly accompany the Center. She shared: “Every time we come to the Center, our group not only comes to give some gifts and meals but also brings our hearts, so that the uncles and aunts can clearly feel that society still has people watching, loving and willing to share. We just hope that the uncles and aunts will always be healthy and if possible, one day they can return to reunite with their loved ones.”

From the innovation in leadership and direction of the Board of Directors to the enthusiasm and responsibility of each officer and employee, up to now, the management, nurturing and care of subjects at the Provincial Social Work Center has been carried out scientifically and effectively, contributing significantly to gradually improving the material and spiritual life of the subjects.

The center still quietly acts as a "support" for the less fortunate, a place where each person, no matter how lost or hurt, can still find a smile, nurture optimism, have more motivation to rise up and gradually integrate into the community./.
