Thai mangosteen stirs up the market

In the summer of 2025, the Vietnamese fruit market witnessed the explosion of Thai mangosteen, with a widespread presence from traditional markets to e-commerce platforms. Consumers' preference for this fruit has created a strong "wave" of consumption, surpassing domestic mangosteen in terms of output and consumption speed.

According to a survey by reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, at traditional markets in Hanoi , the price of Thai mangosteen ranges from 90,000 to 100,000 VND/kg for grade 1, while grades 2 and 3 are only from 45,000 to 60,000 VND, and some wholesalers even sell for about 30,000 VND if purchased by basket. Meanwhile, domestic mangosteens cost from 45,000 to 55,000 VND/kg.

According to traders, the preference for Thai mangosteens is largely due to their superior quality compared to domestic mangosteens. Thai mangosteens have thin, dark purple skin, are uniform in size and are less susceptible to damage, while Vietnamese mangosteens often have thick skin, are uneven in size and are susceptible to damage when ripe.

Mr. Tran Van Huu, a trader at Nghia Tan market (Cau Giay district, Hanoi) said: “The price of Thai mangosteen is a bit higher, but customers still choose it because it is eye-catching, has a beautiful shiny skin, each fruit is of its own kind, and rarely spoils. Domestic mangosteens are cheaper, but the fruit is often uneven and easily damaged during transportation. As for my stall, I have to import 3-4 shipments of Thai goods every week to have enough to sell, while Vietnamese mangosteens are mainly considered by customers and are bought less.”

On e-commerce platforms and social networks, Thai mangosteen is sold for 70,000 to 95,000 VND/kg, attracting great interest from consumers.

Ms. Le Minh Phuong, owner of an online fruit store specializing in selling via Facebook in Hai Ba Trung district, shared: “I livestream selling Thai mangosteen almost every night, sometimes closing orders for hundreds of kilograms after only 2 hours. Although the price on the online platform is 15,000 to 30,000 VND/kg higher than the traditional market, customers still compete to order because I guarantee beautiful products, select each fruit, and deliver to your home within 2 hours. Some regular customers even order a week in advance for fear of running out of stock.”

Small traders "close orders" continuously

The boom of Thai mangosteen not only benefits consumers but also facilitates small traders and retailers in increasing sales and profits.

According to a survey by reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Thai mangosteen accounts for more than 90% of the market share in Hanoi's traditional markets, with an import volume of nearly 100 tons per day and almost no inventory. Although the retail price is about 10,000 VND/kg higher than domestic mangosteen, consumers still prefer Thai mangosteen due to its consistent quality, rich sweetness and attractive appearance.

Many retailers in Hanoi said that Thai mangosteen is the best-selling product this summer. Ms. Kim Anh, a fruit wholesaler at the Southern wholesale market (Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi) shared that she sells from 50 to 100 kg of Thai mangosteen every day, with stable profits.

“Thai mangosteens are selling very well this year. They are imported in the morning and almost sold out by the afternoon. Consumers now prefer beautiful products with even fruit that are not hard or sour like some domestic mangosteens,” added Ms. Kim Anh.

Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, a vendor at Thanh Cong market (Ba Dinh district, Hanoi) shared: "Although the price is high, customers still choose to buy because they say it is 'worth the money'. There was a day when I called to import more but the supplier said it was out of stock because the consumption in Hanoi had increased dramatically."

Ordering 5kg of Thai mangosteen on an online community market group, Ms. Tran Thi Mai (Cau Giay District, Hanoi) shared: “I often buy Thai mangosteen at a market near my house or order online. Although the price is higher than domestic mangosteen, the fruit is big, sweet, not sour or hard, and very tasty. For me, spending an extra 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg but getting a quality product is still worth the money. There are many days when I go to the market late and there are no more products to buy, so sometimes I have to order the night before.”

The boom of Thai mangosteen in the Vietnamese fruit market in 2025 is the result of a combination of superior product quality, competitive prices and stable supply. While consumers benefit from access to high-quality products, small traders also take advantage of the opportunity to increase their sales. However, this also poses a challenge for the domestic agricultural sector in improving product quality and stabilizing output to compete effectively with imports.

Thai mangosteens have a long growing season from April to July, which helps maintain a more stable supply than domestic products, which are typically harvested from May to July.
