According to a spokesman for Denver International Airport, the fire was promptly extinguished and no casualties were reported.
Images from the scene showed smoke surrounding the plane as passengers stood on the wings waiting to be evacuated.
In an official statement, American Airlines said that flight 1006 landed safely at Denver Airport but experienced an engine-related problem while moving to the gate. At the time of the incident, there were 172 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
“All passengers and crew have been deplaned and taken to the terminal. We would like to thank the crew, the Denver team and the emergency services for their quick and decisive actions, putting everyone’s safety first,” the airline said in a statement.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it would open an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, Boeing declined to comment and referred all questions to American Airlines and the investigating agencies.
The engine fire is one of several recent serious aviation incidents in the United States that have raised concerns about aviation safety, especially after a collision between an American Airlines plane and a military helicopter on January 29 that killed 67 people.
