The Mac Pro is Apple's most expensive computer line, aimed at professional users. The product launched last night has a starting price of 180 million VND, about 80 million VND more expensive than the Mac Studio, the model closest in functionality. The Mac Pro 2023 also costs about 40 million VND more than the previous generation, launched in 2019, at the basic option.
However, when comparing the highest configuration version of the two supported devices, the machine running the Apple Silicone chip is nearly 1 billion VND cheaper. Specifically, when users choose all the most expensive options for the Mac Pro 2023 on the Apple website, the announced price is about 330 million VND.
Meanwhile, the 2019 Mac Pro model costs up to 1.3 billion VND if customers choose to add all the upgrades the company offers.
However, these two versions of Mac Pro are difficult to compare side by side, due to the many differences in platform and options. Specifically, Apple sells an additional Afterburner card to decode and render ProRes and ProRes RAW video for the 2019 model. This is an important component that makes the device's graphics processing performance outstanding. The price of this component is 2,000 USD/piece, and can be attached multiple times to increase power.
In the newly released version, the Afterburner card is integrated directly into the processor. Apple said they equipped 7 of the above cards in the default configuration. If converted into money, this feature costs up to 14,000 USD (about 328 million VND).
In addition, the previous Mac Pro model also had the option of RAM up to 1.5 TB (12x128 GB). This is also an important component, accounting for a large proportion of the total value of the machine. Meanwhile, Apple limited the number on the newly launched device to 192 GB.
At the event, Apple advertised a lot about the work and processing features of the new Mac Pro, running on the M2 Ultra chip. However, the device's scalability and ability to serve professional users still cannot be compared to the previous generation Xeon chip.
The Intel Xeon W processor can accept 12 sticks of 128 GB RAM, much higher than the 192 GB built-in memory of the new version. The Mac Pro 2019 can also run duo (parallel) two Radeon Pro Vega II graphics cards, each with 32 GB of memory.
9to5Mac believes that more RAM is never too much for professional users, who require high-speed memory with large capacity for work tasks. Therefore, Apple's inability to equip more RAM proves that the company is having problems, limited in hardware and chip design.
The 2023 Mac Pro’s expandability comes in the form of eight Thunderbolt ports and six PCI slots for modular expansion. Users can purchase additional discrete cards, from Apple and third-party partners, for highly specialized work.
The actual performance and working ability of the newly launched computer model will need to be verified when the device reaches users. Apple said the product will start shipping to pre-order customers from next week.
