Messi's main goal is to overthrow Laporta - who is the current president and the leading candidate for a fourth term at Barcelona. The main reason Messi decided to act comes from a deep rift in his relationship with Laporta.

Messi still believes the current president “betrayed his trust” in the summer of 2021. Laporta publicly promised Messi a contract extension – a deal that was ready to be signed – but ultimately pulled out at the last minute due to the club’s dire financial situation.

Laporta was once suspected of deliberately letting Messi leave.

As a result, Messi was forced to leave Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain, a decision that left his family and millions of fans of the Catalan team heartbroken.

Messi even personally voted for Laporta in the 2021 election, but he now considers that a big mistake. The Barcelona presidential election is scheduled to take place from March 15 to June 15, 2026.
