Meta has appointed Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI scientist and co-founder of the ChatGPT project, as chief scientist at the Superintelligence Lab, a newly created unit to lead the company's advanced AI efforts.
The information was announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his personal Threads account. The billionaire also confirmed that Zhao was a co-founder of the new lab and a key scientist from the very beginning.
“In his new role, Shengjia will set the research agenda and scientific direction for Meta’s new lab. He will work directly with Alex and me,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote.
Zhao's appointment quickly attracted attention in the tech world, especially since Meta already has a talented AI scientist, Yann LeCun. This led many to question LeCun's role at the tech giant.
“My role as FAIR’s chief scientist has always been to focus on long-term AI research and building the next models. My role and FAIR’s mission remain unchanged,” LeCun clarified on LinkedIn.
FAIR (Facebook AI Research) is Meta's artificial intelligence research center, founded more than a decade ago. It is the place where many important technologies are developed, including the open-source large language model Llama, launched in 2023. Currently, LeCun is focusing on research on " world models", a direction that is expected to replace traditional large language models in the future.
Meanwhile, the Superintelligence Lab is an umbrella organization led by Wang, former CEO of Scale AI. It includes groups like FAIR, an AI investment fund, and a product development department. According to an internal Meta memo, the new lab will aim to build “personal superintelligence for everyone.”
“Shengjia is an outstanding scientist who has recently pioneered the development of a new scaling model. He will lead the scientific direction of our team,” wrote Alexandr Wang.
LeCun concluded his response by emphasizing that he looks forward to working closely with Zhao to accelerate the integration of new research into Meta’s most advanced models. The move signals Facebook’s parent company’s aggressive investment and expansion in AI, with a clear separation between basic research and superintelligence deployment strategies.
