On July 17, Meta announced that it would suspend the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in Brazil, after the country's government objected to the corporation's new privacy policy regarding personal data and AI.
With more than 200 million people, Brazil is an important market for Meta. Brazil has the second-largest user base of Meta's WhatsApp messaging app, after India.
This past June, the US tech giant held an event in Sao Paulo to launch its first AI-based targeted advertising program for businesses on the popular chat service.
Recently, Brazil's National Data Protection Agency (ANPD) decided to immediately suspend Meta's new privacy policy on the use of personal data to train generative AI systems in the country.
ANPD believes that Meta needs to adjust its privacy policy to exclude the section related to the use of personal data to train generative AI.
In a statement, Meta confirmed that it had decided to temporarily suspend the use of the above tools and said it was working with ANPD to address the authorities' skepticism about artificial intelligence.
