Mexico launches operation to hunt down armed attackers

On July 21, an armed attack occurred at a beer shop in the southern city of Morelia, capital of the western state of Michoacán (Mexico), leaving five young people under the age of 18 dead and two injured.

The attack occurred on the night of July 20 when the victims were drinking beer at a store in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood when they were attacked by an armed group. After the incident, the perpetrators got into a small car and fled south to the city of Morelia, according to a statement from the Michoacán Attorney General's Office.

Three male victims died at the scene, while two others died in hospital. Two seriously injured people were taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment by local authorities.

Meanwhile, the local prosecutor's office said it was investigating the cause of the incident, predicting that it could be a revenge attack by drug gangs or an extortion racket demanding floor fees from beer stores.

Morelia is the largest and most populous city in the state of Michoacán, with over 743,000 residents. It is also home to a number of gangs, including the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), Knights Templar, Los Correa, Viagras and Blancos de Troya.
