Microsoft has added special QR codes to the replacement parts, markings that indicate the type of part, as well as the characteristics of the screws used and the types of tools needed to replace it. "They are easy to maintain and have intuitive icons and clear repair instructions," Microsoft's Surface general manager Nancy Gaskill said in a statement to The Verge .
Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 are very repairable
These changes make the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 the most serviceable Surface devices ever. The Surface Pro 10’s replaceable parts include the display module, removable SSD, battery, motherboard (including CPU and RAM), Surface Connect port, cooling system, microphone module, SSD slot, speakers, chassis, front and rear cameras, power and volume controls, and kickstand. Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop 6’s replaceable parts include the display, keyboard assembly, SSD, battery, motherboard, Surface Connect port, cooling system, audio jack, speakers, touchpad, frame, and feet.
Microsoft has been trying to make Surface devices easier to maintain and repair for several years, after digital device repair company iFixit dubbed the first Surface Laptop in 2017 a "glue monster," scoring it a 0/10 on its repairability scale.
Parts are provided with QR codes
The company improved things with the release of the Surface Pro X tablet in 2019, which added a removable SSD and more modular components. In 2021, Microsoft began a partnership with iFixit, with iFixit starting to sell official replacement parts for the 2022 Surface Pro 9 tablet, earning iFixit a repairability score of 7/10.
Microsoft isn’t the only company trying to make it easier to repair its devices. Lenovo recently partnered with iFixit to offer replacement parts for some ThinkPad laptops. On its latest ThinkPad models, Lenovo has also started marking the locations of SSDs and RAM modules more clearly, as well as implementing QR codes for replaceable components and information about the screws used.
