Organic intensive farming model and OCOP product processing

Việt NamViệt Nam18/04/2025

For a long time, Dong Pan tea trees in Doc Lap commune, Quang Hoa district have become a key crop, making an important contribution to poverty reduction for local people. However, tea production still faces many problems in productivity and product quality. To solve this problem, Cao Bang province has approved the implementation of the provincial science and technology project "Building a model of intensive cultivation to renovate the Dong Pan tea area associated with processing some high-quality green tea products to create OCOP products", creating a sustainable direction for Dong Pan tea trees.

Intensive model of organic tea improvement in Doc Lap commune, Quang Hoa district.

To build the model, the project conducted a survey and investigation of the Doong Pan tea area. 34 households were selected to participate in the model of planting 3 hectares of new organic tea and 110 households were selected to participate in the model of intensive cultivation and renovation of 10 hectares of tea in an organic direction. 150 tea trees with outstanding productivity and quality were selected in Doong Pan 1 and Doong Pan 2 villages. These tea trees were specially cared for to develop elite tea varieties, contributing to the construction of a high-quality tea nursery model. This nursery model has a scale of 100,000 tea pots, propagated from elite tea cuttings. After 10 months of propagation in the nursery, the rate of pots ensuring export to the garden reached 85%. All seedlings were assigned to 34 households to plant over 3 hectares of new tea varieties; the model has grown and developed well, with a survival rate of over 95%. After a period of implementation, the model tea area has been significantly improved, the tea plants have grown well, and productivity has increased significantly. Thanks to the application of technical measures, the number of picking batches has increased by 2.5 times compared to before the project, the number of picking batches has reached 8 batches/year, the tea yield has increased by 30 - 40% compared to before, the tea areas that were not harvested after the technical impact have been harvested. Since then, the tea yield of the model has increased by 70% compared to before the project and increased by 61.8% compared to the mass production model. From such results, local tea growers have initially seen the clear effectiveness of the organic tea intensive farming model, the tea plants have grown well, productivity has increased, and the tea bud material is stable.

Improving the quality of tea processing is emphasized.

In addition to renovating the tea garden, the project also focuses on improving the quality of tea processing. The implementing unit has completed the installation of processing equipment for the Doong Pan Tea Cooperative, including a vacuum packaging machine and a drying counter, helping to preserve tea better and increase product value. Transferring and training on processing procedures for specialty tea products for the cooperative and households participating in the project, including: high-quality green tea processing process, fragrant green tea processing process, Mao Tiem tea processing process. The project "Building a model of intensive cultivation and renovation of Doong Pan tea growing area associated with processing some high-quality green tea products to create OCOP products" creates a solid foundation for local tea development.

The project will be implemented from May 2022 to May 2025, chaired by the Tea Research and Development Center - Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute. The project aims to select tea trees that meet productivity and quality standards for propagation and expansion of planting area; apply technical advances to improve and intensify productivity and efficiency for 10.0 hectares of existing tea in an organic direction; build a tea nursery from selected tea cuttings, with a scale of 100,000 pots for new planting with a garden exit rate of over 72.0%; build a new planting model of Doong Pan tea on a scale of 3 hectares in Doc Lap commune, Quang Hoa district, with a survival rate of over 85.0%; transfer technology, build a processing model, some high-quality green tea products on a household scale; provide training for tea producers. Thereby improving the productivity and quality of tea products through the application of modern farming methods, combined with processing tea products that meet OCOP standards to create branded tea products, increasing economic value for local people.

In the coming time, to ensure sustainable development for the Doong Pan tea area, it is necessary to continue to maintain organic intensive farming models, diversify products, and promote trade promotion activities to bring Doong Pan tea products to a wider market. The project has created a solid foundation for local tea development and brought great opportunities for sustainable economic development.
