On September 13, 2024, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) issued Circular No. 10/2024/TT-BTTTT, stipulating an extension of the deadline for discontinuing 2G mobile phone services until October 16, 2024.

Information regarding the shutdown of 2G services has received much attention from the public, especially in the context of storms and heavy rain, where mobile phone service is extremely practical. On September 13th, the Ministry of Information and Communications issued a Circular extending the period for discontinuing 2G services. Accordingly, the suspension of services for 2G-only subscriber devices will be extended for another month, from September 16th, 2024 to October 16th, 2024.

This means that users of 2G phones will have more time to upgrade and switch to using newer technology phones to meet their daily communication needs. The Ministry of Information and Communications ' decision to postpone the shutdown is considered very practical and timely, helping people and businesses to promptly overcome the damage caused by Typhoon No. 3. On the other hand, a segment of 2G-Only subscribers who have not yet switched include vulnerable groups, disadvantaged households, and those in hard-to-reach areas such as remote, mountainous regions, which are affected by the typhoon and floods.

Alongside postponing the 2G phone shutdown deadline, MobiFone has also extended its "Exchange for a 2G Phone - Unexpected Offer" promotion until October 15, 2024. According to MobiFone, delaying the promotion will give people more time to upgrade their devices to experience the modern network environment, allowing the "Exchange for a 2G Phone - Unexpected Offer" program to reach more MobiFone customers.

Accordingly, from now until October 15, 2024, MobiFone is offering free FP2 packages (2GB/day for 90 days) to customers using 2G phones who upgrade to smartphones (renewal after 3 months to the MXH100 package) and CD4G packages (1,000 minutes of MobiFone internal calls and 40 minutes of external calls, valid for 30 days) to customers using 2G phones who upgrade to 4G feature phones (renewal after 1 month at a price of 50,000 VND/month).

In addition, the network provider is offering free 4G SIM card upgrades for customers currently using 2G/3G SIM cards; and is also giving away a data package worth 30,000 VND (30GB/7 days) to customers using 2G SIM cards on smartphones who upgrade to 4G SIM cards during the two-month program period.

Regarding phone support programs, MobiFone is giving away Masstel Izi S1/T2 phones to 2G subscribers who register for the 12CD70 package (70,000 VND/month for 12 months, free on-net calls and 70 minutes of off-net calls/month); and donating 670 Samsung A05 smartphones to poor households in Da Nang.

To support the public, MobiFone is collaborating with retailers to implement promotional programs for customers. During the program period, people can bring their working 2G phones to The Gioi Di Dong (Mobile World) to exchange them for new 4G phones, receive a coupon worth 480,000 VND to purchase a 3MXH100 data SIM, and get 3 months of free 3MXH100 data with 90GB of data valid for 90 days. FPT Shop is also running a "Turn off 2G, upgrade to a 4G phone" program, offering up to 600,000 VND in discounts for customers upgrading from used 2G phones to 4G phones.

Through a series of promotional programs, it is clear that MobiFone is always committed to supporting the government in helping people transition to the digital environment. Collaborating with many major players in the market, MobiFone has contributed to enhancing users' technological experiences, providing Vietnamese people with more opportunities to use digital and data services in a modern online environment.
