Moldova changes national language, Russia says 'not consistent with historical logic'

On March 18, on the Telegram channel, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the decision of the Moldovan Parliament to change the national language from Moldovan to Romanian was not consistent with historical logic.

Earlier, Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu announced that during the second discussion, with 58 votes in favor, the legislature passed an amendment to the law changing the country's national language from Moldovan to Romanian.

According to the bill, the words "Moldovan" in any grammatical form will be replaced by "Romanian". At the same time, the words "national language", "mother tongue" and "official language" will also be replaced by "Romanian".

Ms. Zakharova noted that the Moldovan language is mentioned in studies published in the 16th-17th centuries, in particular in the work “Chronological Treasures”.

During this period of history, the chroniclers did not mention the Romanian language as such. They spoke of the existence of the Old Romanian language (Wallachian).

Given that the Romanian language was formed only at the end of the 18th century, thanks to the theologian Samuil Miku-Klein, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted, this move led to the paradox that today the Moldovan language is officially maintained only in Transnistria.

Ms. Zakharova concluded that it is still necessary to follow historical logic and call it "Moldovan Romanian and not vice versa".
