Recognizing that the environment is a vital factor in sustainable development, Mong Cai City has focused on propaganda andeducation to raise public awareness of protecting the sea and islands. Action programs such as “Green Sunday” and “Let’s clean up the sea” have been deployed simultaneously in coastal communes and wards, attracting the participation of thousands of youth union members, border guards, officials and people.

Along with that, Mong Cai also brings environmental education content into schools, organizes drawing contests, and makes recycled products for students, thereby fostering awareness of nature protection from the young generation.

As a locality with a large aquaculture surface area, the management of aquaculture areas associated with ecological protection is always a top priority for the city. Mong Cai has reviewed and handled dozens of cases of aquaculture outside the planning, illegal encroachment on tidal flats, and at the same time guided people to convert traditional aquaculture to advanced, environmentally friendly technology.

Some shrimp and fish farming models using water circulation technology and microbiological treatment instead of chemicals in Hai Hoa, Van Ninh, Binh Ngoc, Quang Nghia, Hai Dong... have shown positive results, both saving costs and limiting waste generation into the environment. The city also coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to organize training and transfer techniques to farmers, promoting the formation of sustainable production chains.

At the same time, the protection of aquatic resources has been strengthened. The authorities of coastal communes and wards have stepped up propaganda to fishermen to strictly implement the "3 no's" in exploitation: Do not use electric shocks or explosives; do not catch aquatic products below the prescribed size; do not catch during the ban period. Thanks to that, people's awareness has changed significantly, the number of violations has decreased over the years.

With the increasing amount of waste from daily life, farming and tourism, Mong Cai has proactively invested in a synchronous waste treatment system. The city has completed and put into operation a waste treatment plant in Quang Nghia commune with a capacity of 120 tons/day using environmentally friendly waste treatment technology; built incinerators in Hai Son and Bac Son communes, and is actively calling for investment in building waste treatment plants in Vinh Trung and Vinh Thuc.

In addition, the authorities have increased inspections and strictly punished establishments that discharge waste in violation of regulations; launched a movement to classify waste at source in residential areas. These efforts have initially improved the quality of seawater, creating a clean and beautiful environment for economic and tourism development.

In addition to the achievements, the work of protecting the marine and island environment in Mong Cai is still facing many difficulties. First of all, there is pressure from uncontrolled aquaculture development. Many households discharge waste directly from their ponds into the sea, causing water pollution, affecting plankton and coastal marine ecosystems.

In addition, some aquaculture areas have not yet invested in synchronous technical infrastructure such as wastewater collection and treatment systems, garbage dumps, etc., causing difficulties in management. The relocation and clearance of illegal and unlicensed aquaculture households has encountered many difficulties.

Another challenge is the high number of tourists in the summer, which leads to a large amount of domestic waste while human resources and environmental sanitation equipment are limited. Patrolling and controlling illegal fishing at sea is also difficult due to large areas, lack of specialized equipment, and limited human resources.

With high determination and the participation of the entire political system, Mong Cai City is gradually overcoming shortcomings, making efforts to protect the marine and island environment; focusing on developing the marine economy associated with environmental protection in the direction of green - clean - sustainable; at the same time building a community monitoring mechanism, promoting the application of technology in resource management, protecting the marine ecosystem for sustainable development.
